Default Updating iPhone 4 iOS 4.1 to untethered jailbreak w/ unlock without updating baseband

    What I have now:
I have an iPhone 4 on iOS 4.1 with modem firmware 02.10.04.
It's jailbroken with GreenPois0n, and I have SHSH blobs for only iOS 4.2.1.

    My goal:
My goal is to update to iOS 4.2.1 (untethered jailbreak and unlocked).
(My phone was activated through an official carrier.)

There's a lot of information all over the web on how to do bits and pieces of this, so I'm trying to confirm if this is the correct procedure for my situation:

    1. iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 4 Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.2.1]
(At step 6, I should deselect "Activate" since my iPhone's legitimately activated on an official carrier, in order to prevent breaking push notifications too.)

I assume this is for untethered despite only being explicitly mentioned in a separate article here: iClarified - Apple News - PwnageTool 4.2 With iOS 4.2.1 Untethered Jailbreak Released! ?

    2. At step 10 in the first tutorial, where we're about to restore from a custom .ipsw built with PwnageTool 4.2 in iTunes, I should switch to this tutorial:
iClarified - iPhone - How to Update Your iPhone 4 Without Upgrading the Baseband (Mac) [4.2.1]
and continue with the TinyUmbrella steps and...

    3. ...ultimately, Greenpois0n, as step 9 in the last link suggests. So that leads me here:
iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 Using Greenpois0n (Mac) [4.2.1]

    4. Now that I'm jailbroken untethered (with an unchanged baseband?), I can unlock using Ultrasn0w here:
iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock the iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G Using UltraSn0w, though it concerns me that my baseband of 02.10.04 isn't listed among their list of: 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, 06.15.00, or 01.59.

Does this sound correct? The first three steps are for jailbreaking untethered with a custom IPSW for iOS 4.2.1 without updating the baseband. The fourth step is for unlocking on that original 02.10.04 baseband. Am I overcomplicating this?

Edit: I only suggest staying on my current baseband because of all the warnings against allowing the baseband to be updated to 06.15.00 or whichever comes with 4.2.1.

I don't think it's possible to unlock your iPhone. There is no unlock for that version of baseband.

For which version? 02.10.04? Which baseband do I get if I update to 4.2.1 without holding back the baseband?

ktula is correct. There is not presently an unlock solution for a phone in your situation. Since you have 02.10.04, your only choice is to upgrade to the baseband included in 4.2.1, which is 03.10.01, but that baseband is also not able to be unlocked at present...

Unfortunately your best bet is to stay where you are. The jailbreak on 4.2.1 is much more reliable now than it was, but the jailbreak software still hasn't been upgraded, and there's always a better possibility of an older baseband being exploited than a newer one. I hate to have to tell you that you're out of luck, but I want to stress the fact that you don't want to mess around with any of the fake unlockers you're going to see online -- they will only end up causing you grief. There just isn't an unlock for your phone just yet.

@Chimerica: You can certainly use the latest Pwnage Tool to update to iOS 4.2.1 while retaining the current version of the baseband in your iPhone. Your iPhone will remain locked until someone figures out an unlock for 02.10.04.

New goal: Update to iOS 4.2.1 without hacktivation and with preservation of baseband

If my new goal is simply to:
    - update to iOS 4.2.1 jailbroken
    - preserve my baseband
    - deselect "Activate" since my iPhone's legitimately activated on an official carrier, in order to prevent breaking push notifications

...do I need to go through the PwnageTool/TinyUmbrella/Greenpois0n three-step process? Normally, it seems like I would just go through TinyUmbrella/Greenpois0n, but greenpois0n offers no do-not-activate option in the third bullet list item above (whereas PwnageTool does).

Edit: In other words, PwnageTool doesn't seem to have a way to preserve the baseband. greenpois0n doesn't seem to have a way to prevent hacktivation and instead maintain the official activation via AT&T. Seems like an either-or situation.

Pwnagetool 4.2 will preserve baseband ... It always does.
If you have a mac, run pwnagetool 4.2, select expert mode, select firmware 4.2.1 for your iphone4, click next ..... follow the instruction on the screen to create CUSTOM firmware (note: if you have a legit SIM to activate, you can uncheck the "Activation" in pwnage)
At the end, it will ask you to put the phone in DFU mode then it will send over the exploit. Once that is done, you quit pwnagetool, run itunes and option-click restore to select the custom firmware 4.2.1 you just created with pwnagetool 4.2.

But if PwnageTool builds the custom firmware off of stock firmware (iPhone3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw), wouldn't the updated baseband in the stock firmware carry over? There also wouldn't be a need for tutorials that explicitly guide people to preserve the baseband, like the one with TinyUmbrella, or at least, so I would think. Hopefully, I'm mistaken?

Pwnagetool doesn't delete the new baseband out of the stock firmware. What it does is change a setting that is used by the restore script.
This setting disables the "update firmware" part of the restore script. This setting (when set properly by PwnageTool) will block baseband update on all iOS devices. (including the iPhone 4)

Pwnagetool always defaults to preventing baseband update. Some pwnagetool versions have allowed you to deliberately enable baseband update via expert settings (Pwnagetool 4.0.1 had this option for example)

The way the baseband update is handled on the iPhone 4 is different and this is why TinyUmbrella can only block the baseband update on the iPhone 4.

Many people get confused and think that TinyUmbrella will block baseband update on a 3G or 3GS. Which it doesn't

With iOS 4.2, there seems to be some extra checks (exactly where and what they are, I haven't been able to get a clear picture of) during restore that cause the restore to fail in a way that isn't so easy to bypass if the baseband isn't the expected/correct version. The very latest beta version of TinyUmbrella (OS X only for now) can now safely exit from this type of restore fail.

So I would have to use TinyUmbrella in my situation (iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1), since this is the one situation where PwnageTool's behavior of preserving the baseband will not work when restoring from the custom firmware through iTunes (and subsequently normally phoning home to Apple's servers). If that's the case, how do I combine TinyUmbrella instructions with PwnageTool instructions, since TinyUmbrella instructions lead into the greenpois0n process instead?
