Default Update to 4.2 on simfree but jailbroken iPhone 4

I have a simfree, but jailbroken iPhone 4 running 4.1
Today as apple released 4.2, i want to UPDATE to it for the find my phone app. If I do so will the update(not restore!) process run successfully on jailbroken ios 4.1 ?
I will wait for untethered jailbreak, till then don't mind jailbroken apps to not run on 4.2

Any other pitfalls? has anyone tried it yet?

On my older iPhone (1st gen) the upgrade process use to fail on jailbroken device and had no option but to do a restore and transfer music and stuff again.

Let me break down your question into a few answers to help...

    1) No one here will recommend upgrading from a jailbroken OS to a non-jailbroken OS without wiping/flashing. Doing this as an 'upgrade' leaves a lot of files hanging around in the filesystem and can cause serious problems with leftover data. Do yourself a favor, if you want your phone to work, do a backup, wipe the device, set up as new, copy any databases you want manually, and re-sync your media library. It's the only way to get a 100% stable and reliable device.

    2) I know you say your phone is sim-free, but there are a lot of less than reputable sellers out there. If you're not 150% sure that your phone is officially unlocked, you may upgrade your phone to find out that you're now in possession of an expensive brick. The baseband in 4.2.1 cannot be unlocked yet on an iPhone 4 and there have been no dev-team announcements saying that it will be unlocked any time soon. (The 3G/S unlock for 4.2.1 should be released sometime soon, but not the 4).

    3) As you mentioned, none of the jailbreak software really works on 4.2.1 yet, so there's really no rationale behind upgrading if you're a jailbreaker.

If you just want to unjailbreak the device and drop off the pwnage-train, AND your phone is officially unlocked / sim-free, then upgrading (without wiping and setting up as new) will work, you'll just run the extremely high risk of having battery life problems, crashy apps, etc. All in all I'd argue it's worth doing the backup, restoring, and manually copying anything important over.

But I'm personally in no rush to get to 4.2, so I'm coming at this from a totally different angle than you

Thanks for your answers, I just wanted to upgrade for that findmyphone app. I paid a lot for this device []

I expected that the files lying around just won't execute because of permission problems, so no battery problems and when I jailbreak again on 4.2.1, things would start running again..

P.S. Mine is 200% simfree, direct from apple UK.

This is an extremely common misconception -- the trick is that some jailbreak apps do make changes to specific files that do not get replaced during an upgrade, as the upgrade only touches the system partition and leaves the user partition (including settings and the relocated applications directory) completely untouched -- this is what causes the most problems. You're correct that you'll have apps on there that don't work and crash, but that will likely be the least of your problems -- other horrible things include wifi issues, push certificate issues, hacktivation issues (some of the current jailbreak tools are less than friendly with how they hacktivate), battery life issues, and other sporadic / difficult to nail down issues.

With all that said, I have definitely done it before though and had little to no negative ramifications -- albeit, I did it from 2.x to 3.x, so it wasn't 3.x to 4 -- it most likely won't hurt anything to do the upgrade first and try, but if you start to experience really difficult to troubleshoot or sporadic issues, I'd suggest the first thing to try would be a true wipe and restore.

    Good luck!

You should get your SHSH now (may already be too late) for iOS 4.1 or 4.2b3

Based on the details that have been made available up to now, I don't think that the untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 will work without a SHSH for 4.1 or 4.2beta3

It is very hard to say anything definite while the iPhone dev team is still testing out untethered jailbreak ideas to see which approach will work
