Unlocking 3G: iOS 4.2.1 with BB 5.15.04
Jailbreak virgin here.
Recently got a hand-me-down iPhone 3G from a friend. I plugged it into my MacBook Pro and stupidly agreed to update to the latest firmware, which is iOS 4.2.1 with baseband 5.15.04. Then I realized that the phone is locked to Rogers Canada while I am currently on Fido.
From what I have learnt online so far, I deduced that I need to do the following to unlock it:
1. Download PwnageTool 4.1.3 and use iPad1,1_3.2.2_7B500 to create custom IPSW (redsn0w seems easier, but I can't seem to find a 9.6rc8 link that is not broken).
2. Restore iPhone with this IPSW and run ultrsn0w via Cydia.
This should give me an unlocked phone with a tethered jailbreak which, from what I've read so far, is not as easy to use as an untethered jailbreak.
To achieve untethered jailbreak, I need to generate an IPSW with PwnageTool 4.2 instead. But it doesn't seem to recognize the above mentioned iPad IPSW as the correct IPSW for my iPhone.
Does that mean I should still go through the above steps BEFORE using PwnageTool 4.2 to generate an IPSW based on the original iPhone1,2_4.2.1 IPSW?
Do I need to do anything between the tethered and the untethered jailbreak?
Also, is there an easier way to unlock?
Any potential issue I should be aware of?
Any help is much appreciated.
Or any suggestions on where I should go to learn more?
So far I have looked at Dev-Team Blog and iClarified.
i dont understand why anyone didnt answer your questions.
What you need to do is use redsn0w and install the ipad baseband which is 6.15 and then unlock it using ultrasn0w from cydia.
You can still do this as i did this yesterday on a 3G. Good Luck.
Mostly because this is a duplicate question and the original poster should have searched before creating a duplicate thread.
