    Default Unlock jail-broken iPhone 3GS iOS.4.3.3, firmware 05.16.02

    Hello all,

I am completely new to all this. I just got an old iPhone 3GS v.4.3.3 (8J2), firmware 05.16.02. I used jailbreakme.com for jailbreaking.

I now want to unlock this iphone so I can use it to make calls.

Please let me know what my options are.

    Thanks!

You know this information is well documented in this forum and elsewhere. Next time try searching before asking a (very) duplicate question.

I hope you have already used TinyUmbrella and iFaith to backup any SHSH blobs still available to you. You can definitely get a partial 4.3.3 SHSH blob via iFaith.

In your country, you might be able to get the carrier to authorise an official unlock (likely this will need to be requested by the original owner of the phone)
I strongly suggest that you try this approach first as the alternative is not ideal.

This is NOT a solution we advise you rush into. There is no way to reverse this and it can break GPS and make restores/updates etc more difficult see this thread for more details.

Hi. I don't mean to thread-jack anything but am hoping I am posting in the right forum for an answer.

My iphone 3GS is frozen with apple logo.

Before jailbreak, it was iOS 4.3.3 (8J2) on baseband 5.16.02

1 - I installed jailbreakme.com directly from my iphone and cydia downloaded and worked - so my iphone was jailbroken; thereafter, I did not install any other apps.

2 - I live in California and am heading abroad so I wanted to unlock my iphone

3 - I downloaded iDetector and it told me I was on the new 3GS boot ROM

4 - I downloaded iFaith and backed up my SHSH blobs; I did not develop or install a custom IPSW from iFaith

    5 - I downloaded redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc16 for my laptop (Windows 7 Professional)

    6 - I downloaded iPhone2,1_4.3.3_8J2_Restore and pointed redsn0w to it

    7 - I used the instructions in How to Unlock iPhone 3GS 05.16.02 Baseband with Ultrasn0w 1.2? | Jaxov

8 - I checked Install Cydia and Install iPad Baseband (which was perhaps a mistake - I should have jailbroken with redsn0w first (checked Install Cydia option only) and then upgraded the baseband to iPad v.6.15)

9 - Redsn0w ran okay and I got the pineapple logo and finally could slide to go to my iPhone screen. I checked settings > general > and it showed v.4.3.3 on 6.15 baseband

10 - next, I attempted to install cydia, which went okay and then it hung on Preparing Filesystem screen - I gave it a really long time before touching my iphone

11 - then I did nothing extra that I am aware of - maybe a power down, maybe a power+home operation - I am not sure

12 - since then my iphone is frozen on the apple logo

13 - I tried reinstalling redsn0w, this time with only the tethered boot option checked - it did something and got me to a pineapple logo which subsequently froze - so a frozen apple logo was replaced by a frozen pineapple logo

14 - I let the battery die, but on re-connecting to power, it reverts to the frozen apple logo screen - which is where I am now.

Someone, please tell me reliably what my options are at this point.

@ Olethros - I hope I didn't violate any forum protocols this time - I tried starting a new thread but could not - so would greatly appreciate any assistance at this time, and happily donate if I can get this back up.

    Thanks a lot.

Your original post was auto-moderated (this happens a lot with people's first posts, the best advice is to lurk for a while and post in the designated "hello/welcome to the forum" threads). If you are having trouble posting/creating legitimate posts then definitely send a moderator a private message and we can fix this.

It's not supported/possible to re-jailbreak with redsn0w when you initially jailbroke with jailbreakme v3. The reason is that at launch, jailbreakme v3 used a new technique for installing Cydia. This is faster/requires less reboots but is 100% incompatible with the old technique used by redsn0w.

This applies ONLY to the jailbreak related tasks (like Install Cydia and hacktivation). It doesn't apply to the Install iPad baseband task (which executes entirely within the ramdisk and doesn't touch your root partition)

So.. now your iFaith SHSH blobs need to be put into action - you MUST restore from custom IPSW to get the phone back working again.

Thank you sir for posting guidelines and your clear advice. Just to be sure I don't brick my phone, should I do the following:

    1) Start iFaith with "Build signed IPSW w/Blobs"

    2) Point it to my saved SHSH files and downloaded iPhone2,1_4.3.3_8J2_Restore

    3) Press Power and Home buttons simultaneously to go from frozen Apple logo screen to PWNed DFU mode

    4) Connect my iPhone cable to the powered off phone

    5) Let iFaith install the custom IPSW on my iphone

... am a little unsure after this... but here's what I've read

    6) I should now be on iOS 4.3.3 from iFaith and 6.15 iPad baseband

    7) So I can use Jailbreakme.com to install cydia??? Or should I use redsn0w to install Cydia? This is where I ran into problems before - so please advise

    8) Then use Ultrasn0w to unlock my phone

Please advise, at your convenience, if I have got this correct. I definitely do not want to experiment and brick my phone. Thanks again for your assistance - you are a fantastic resource for all of us.

    Best regards,
    Rohit

Your description of this step doesn't sound right.
You first get into regular DFU mode, then you use a tool than sends the right exploit files to put the phone into pwned DFU mode. iFaith can send these exploits for you.

This step must be peformed BEFORE the DFU mode/pwned DFU mode step. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get into DFU mode without external power to the phone

Yes, however I'm unsure if iFaith blocks baseband update (if it doesn't the baseband update will fail with a 101x error and you will need to use FixRecovery to get out of this situation.

Use ONLY one of these not both. (If you use redsn0w, it's OK to run redsn0w again to reinstall Cydia or remove hacktivation)

Also, if you are willing to wait a few days, there is a new redsn0w soon to be released that incorporates the iFaith functionality.

Thanks a ton for all your comments above. I think waiting for a few days for the new redsn0w makes sense. Thanks again!

I believe it has been released now. redsn0w win 0.9.9b1 and redsn0w mac 0.9.9b1

Minor problem: the new redsn0w does not (yet) support stitching (merging SHSH with IPSW) for iPhones - this is the same issue I mentioned as a possible gotcha - regarding blocking baseband update. As you already have the 6.15 baseband, the worst taht can happen is that you need to use the "fix recovery" option - also built into the new redsn0w.

Hello sir, one more question - when I use iTunes to restore my 3GS with custom 4.3.3 signed IPSW generated by iFaith; at the end, iTunes asks me to

    Restore as a new iPhone

    or

Restore from the backup of my old iphone

What option should I choose at this point?

I used iFaith to generate a custom IPSW using my SHSH blobs which I had backed up earlier, and did a custom install and now have a screen which gives me everything as before and does not have cydia. So I am back to a working, non-jailbroken version on 4.3.3 and 6.15 iPad baseband.

So iFaith works fine with a baseband upgraded iphone.

It's good to have a working phone again, but I don't want to screw this up again, so on iTunes, should I restore as a new iphone?

Greatly appreciate your help, as always.

    Thanks!
