Hi from a noob.

I got a 3GS from a friend who had upgraded to iOS 4.0.1. I used jailbreakme.com to jailbreak and unlock the phone.

I did not reset the phone before the JB, so am unable to sync to my computer since it is already registered to his computer.

Is there a way around this? I'd like to be able to sync to my iTunes or another media management software. Do I need to reset it now and re-jailbreak/unlock?

All suggestions (besides where to shove my head) are welcome

Just tell it to sync -- it will let you know that if you choose to do this, it will remove all content from the iPhone -- but that's no big deal (you're replacing it with your own content anyway, right?).

If you want to continue to be jailbroken, *DO NOT* do an "Erase all content and settings" -- which is the initial thing most people would think to do to resolve this. If you do that, and do not have an SHSH on file for 4.0 or 4.0.1, you will be stuck restoring to 4.0.2 -- which cannot be jailbroken, and you'll be stuck with a locked phone (unless this is a factory unlocked phone, but those are much more expensive and can only be purchased in certain countries, etc.)

In either case, open Settings.app, go to the Store settings, make sure his account is logged out. Log in with your account. Plug the phone into iTunes, select it from the list, and then in the tabs on the right, tell it to sync the content you want to sync. Say 'OK' to the fact that it will remove all content from the device before sync, and then sync.
