Exclamation Stuck at logo - need to recover data -Cydia Update Failed

    Background
    Iphone 3g - ios4.2.1 - bb 5.15 - JB with ultrasn0w

A cydia app update yesterday froze my phone for about 30 minutes, I had to force restart it. Upon turning back on the phone stuck at the apple logo for another 30 minutes... I personally only need the contacts on the phone, then I have no problem wiping it clean again...

I scoured the internet for hours, and have alot of info, at the end of this fiasco I will consider writing a tutorial. But for the time being, I NEED HELP!

My #1 route would be to not have to restore the phone therefore this seems the most appealing I can SSH over, backup everythign so if I screw up I still have hard-data working ramdisk with ssh but I recently found out that it may not work with 3g 4.2.1 is it true? If its possible, how do i build a custom ramdisk? Ive looked at the tutorials and need help

#2 route would be to "update" the phone with cooked firmware, so the phone gets restored and cleaned, but the user data, messages, contacts and such are still available as per Data recovery: not just for iBoot-pwned devices this would be functional, but if anything screws up, the data is gone for good... Also it days in highlighted letters "PwnageTool: Not recommended/might work" so that may not be an option.

Id personally like to go the #1 route, if anyone has ANY information at all about recovering data, and maybe giving me a very noobie step by step I would be very grateful. All opinions are welcome and if this works I will write an extensive step by step guide.. While on my travels through the net, I also found these tools that are pertinent to recovering data should it help anyone else...

Seems to be the king of the ramdisk
The required files for SSH'n thru ramdisk when the phone is stuck at boot
Software that talkes to the iboot and ibss program in the phone
iReb used for throwing devices into a special cooked recovery mode
More RamDisk info and terminal commands
The drivers required to connect to a bricked iphone for usb support

AS you can see ive been at this for hours, PLEASE help me recover my contacts from my bricked 3g. I will add updates and advances as they occur.

Did you ever get this fixed? I have the same issue, but on a iphone 4, on 4.3.2. I can't see to get an answer if I can run that fix by microsoft guy?

@Jackie1 the tethered SsH ramdisk based on limera1n exploit will work for you if you have a SHSH blob for 4.3.2 (lf you didnt save such blobs but iOS 4.3.2 is what is currently on the phone then iFaith may be able to extract the SHSH blobs from the phone)

I don't think I saved them, but doesn't cydia save them when I did the redsnow jailbreak? I remember when being in cydia is had ssh listed at the top or the bottom. I'm new at this.

ALso, if there is a way i can use a chat with you, please PM me the info.

As i have said before, I generally will not help via private channels. This is mostly because I don't have the time for that. However providing help via private chat doesn't ever help someone else who later experiences the same problem to find an answer.

TinyUmbrella can check/retrieve your SHSH blobs, you will probably have to create a custom device as your phone is not currently in a state where TinyUmbrella can autodetect the ECID.

Here is my suggestion, browse and search this site (use google to search it rather than the inbuilt search which is much more limited) - determine a list of what you think you should do. Then reply to this thread with that list. Myself or another experienced member can critique the list or suggest omissions.
Also the comments on the relevant msft.guy blog posts are full of useful tips and gotchas. Make sure you have access to at least two different (hardware and/or OS wise) machines as I personally had trouble with sending the kernel/ramdisk on one machine and had to switch to another machine before I could successfully boot the patched ramdisk.

You are right, TinyUmbrella can't detect the SHSH. I know it was in cydia when the phone was working, thought it saved it on a server, but I'm new at this and trying. How to create a custom device? How is that done?

I'm taking off work tomorrow as I need to get this working somehow tomorrow. BAD. I'm a little scared to try to ramdisk thing and it's confusing me and all the programs needed. It seems to me from searching that this is the only choice to get the data? I wish there was a modded jailbreak to just delete the /sbin as it seems this is where things can go wrong, from a little digging I did, or some typed of modded jb to fix this type of issue quicker.... I wish I could remote connect to someone and have a little more aid.

I've explained this before, you need to find your ECID manually first. Search...

It's pretty much the only way. Lesson to learn, sync/backup your phone with iTunes more often.
I guess you might be able to have some success with the "swap update/restore ramdisk" trick - but I don't know if that will work in your situation.

You are completely mis-understanding things here. That will stop your phone booting 100%

Thanks again. I found the 16 digit ECID with usbview. I'm raking in so much info, I don't know why I need it, but I saved it in a txt file. You you saying the "swap update/restore damdisk", you are just referring to the fix by microsoft guy, yes?

You need the ECID to create a custom device in TinyUmbrella, then request the SHSH blobs you "think" are saved on Cydia. This is VITAL.

Mostly iPhone hacking: Data recovery: not just for iBoot-pwned devices is what I was referring to, but it says that this is "depreciated" in favour of the SSH ramdisk. I see this as a much less technical approach than the SSH ramdisk and I have been meaning to clarify why it is "depreciated" as I think it could still offer some value.

OK, I put the ECID in tiny umbrella to made a custom device. I unchecked the box to set hosts file to cydia on exit, and unchecked request ssh from cydia. After I generated it, it made like 4-5 saved ssh's. I hope that's right? It doesn't say anything about the 4.3.2 that I'm on.

    Here is a log:
