Springboard crashes after UltraSnow 1.2
Earlier today, I upgraded the software on my jailbroken, unlocked 3GS from 4.0 to 4.2.1., jailbroke it with Pwnage Tool, but Cydia would not start. I needed to unlock the device and couldn't get to Ultrasnow if Cydia wouldn't open.
So I used Redsnow and Installed Cydia again. Now Cydia opened fine. Installed Ultrasn0w 1.2 to unlock the device and had repeated reboots with error message saying that springboard had crashed and was now in Safe Mode (this WAS NOT caused by Mobile substrate, according to the message on the screen!).
Retried the jailbreak several times, did a hard reset and jailbreak, all to no avail. Finally, in desperation updated by baseband from 5.15 to 6.15 and again jailbroke, redsnowed and installed ultrasnow. Again repeated reboots, springboard crashes and safe mode. If I uninstall Mobile Substrate / Ultrasnow the crashes stop, but my SIM card is not detected.
What gives? How do I manage to unlock my phone and not have these annoying reboots / crashes.
Thanks in advance.
When you say upgrade, what specifically do you mean? Do you mean you clicked 'Upgrade' in iTunes to go from 4.0 to 4.2.1? If so, that could likely be a cause of some of the problems you're having. It's always recommended that jailbreakers do a 'shift-restore' instead of an upgrade in iTunes as this actually wipes the phone, clearing out all previous jailbreak data and all previous data on the phone. The backup made by iTunes prior to doing this will allow for the recovery of all call logs, contacts, SMS history, and application data. You can then either shift-restore the phone, tell it to set up as though it was a new phone, and use any of the backup extracting tools to get the actual sqlite databases and copy them manually, or you can tell iTunes to set up from one of your previous backups.
We will always recommend setting up as a new phone and manually moving the data over, as choosing to restore from a backup CAN restore things that you don't want on the phone that may interfere with regular phone operation. As such, the first thing we recommend doing is backing up the data you need specifically, wiping the phone, and trying again with a fresh install on a fresh device -- in most cases you'll find that this resolves the issue. This is of primary concern for the 3G and 3GS devices who may have been 'upgraded' all the way from an iOS 2.0 or 3.0 device to the present iOS revisions -- you can get some seriously difficult to troubleshoot behavior from phones that have been around that long and have bits and pieces of iOS revisions stretching years back... Let me know and we'll go from there.
Also, I notice that you mentioned you installed the 06.15 baseband -- note that this changes how you have to restore firmware to the device and is something you'll want to investigate specifically so that you don't get the baseband errors at the end of the process.

I am having the exact same problem with 2 3g phones, brought them overseas and thought i could just jailbreak and unlock them, they work fine but crash and go into safe mode once or twice a day. All i have done is loaded cydia, done the updates, added the ultrasnow app and now sometimes when you are busy using the phone and get a text it will crash and go into safe mode.
What other mobile substrate Sedona are you using?
