Should I restore my phone?
I'm running the spirit jailbreak on my phone and want the new FW. what is the easiest way to get to that, or should I wait a bit and see the outcome? What's a more preferable JB other then spirit?
thanks.

NO! Do not jump on the iOS4 bandwagon just yet.

Yeah I'm letting it go. Will it be okay since I used Spirit? I'm hearing there might be problems.

To jailbreak 4.0 on the 3GS you need to have old bootrom and either be already pwned (not a userland jailbreak like spirit) or have a 3.1.2 SHSH
If you don't meet these conditions you must wait for new exploits to be revealed that can directly jailbreak OS 4.0 on a 3GS and iPhone 4.
Spirit DOES not work on OS 4.0 or as a new jailbreak on OS 3.1.x with iTunes 9.2 (it's okay if you jailbroke with spirit and then upgraded to iTunes 9.2)

I had used blackrain before this since my phone is fairly new. I got it end of January. I'm gonna stick with this for now since I'm happy with backgrounder and categories for now. I'm still running the old iTunes just waiting for a confirmation and I can install 9.2
I have 5.12.01 so it should be okay, I assume.

You can synchronize a Spirit JB'd device on 9.2 with no problems -- but you cannot jailbreak a device with iTunes 9.2 + Spirit, it bootloops. Just as an FYI. If you don't intend to use Spirit for further jailbreaks, you can upgrade to 9.2 and use the dev-team tools (pwnagetool / redsn0w) and they work fine with 9.2.
Baseband doesn't really matter at this point -- ultrasn0w released yesterday unlocks all 3.0 - 4.0 basebands (3.0/3.0.1/3.1/3.1.2/3.1.3/4.0).
The preceding forum post has been brought to you by the letter "N" and the number 42.

i have a 3GS with old bootrom. i used sauriks SHSH database when prompted in cydia. so thats safe at least!
how can this help my current situation? i just get an error 1600 when trying to restore to custom fw4... repeatedly. my 3gs is now on "connect to itunes" screen and I dont know what to do. i cant seem to restore to any firmware other than official 4.0 which i dont want to try...

Thanks for clarifying that. So what steps do you suggest I take? I'm a bit overwhelmed and just trying to point myself in the right direction. Oh, and I DO have SHSH fo 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 on cydia.

If you got your 3GS in Jan you most likely have new bootrom. (did you have to re-run blackra1n every time?) . If you have new bootrom, then that means no 4.0 (with jailbreak) for you until a new exploit is released.
Old bootrom can use Pwnagetool 4.0.1 to go to iOS 4 with jailbreak.
Is that clear enough?
