Default Restore iPhone4 from 4.1 to everything before!

    Hi,

I bought my iPhone4 from a friend in France. It was unlocked to use in Belgium, but since I updated it via iTunes to the software version 4.1, I can't call or text. He says "no service" or "invalid sim card".

Do I just restore my iPhone in iTunes? Will it work again, or will iTunes just reinstall the 4.1 version of the software? Can I choose to restore with the previous version of the software, because then I was able to text or call.

Thx a lot to those with the helpful answers!

to my knowledge you are on the wrong end of the stick.

You _can_ install any other iOS version however that will not help because you cannot downgrade the bootrom or something. You'll have to wait for a hack for the latest firmware. Don't upgrade your phone until you are sure there's a hack for it

i'm lucky i got mine locked to a carrier i already use so not a big deal for me. I just want a jailbreak already

It is too late to downgrade the baseband. You need to wait (maybe a very long time) for a new ultrasn0w unlock that supports.

No amount of restoring will fix your problem.

I hate to say it, but you never should have upgraded to 4.1. Also, the first response is somewhat misleading -- you cannot restore a previous version of iOS to the device without an SHSH on file, and if you just got the phone it's doubtful that you have one (unless the previous owner took care of it).

In either case, that point is moot because as Olethros mentioned, you cannot presently downgrade the iPhone4's baseband to a baseband that Apple isn't currently signing. The security measures in place now that handle baseband flashing are similar to the SHSH check for the iOS -- Apple must be signing the baseband in order for it to flash to the device. Unfortunately, unlike iOS, the baseband signature check also includes a randomly generated number, unique specifically to that individual request, and that number is used in the reply from Apple (in some way, shape, or form.) This stops the 'cached response' or 'man in the middle' approach of the current SHSH servers from being able to capture and store the response from Apple, as each signing request (even for the same device and same baseband) will be unique, and any previously stored response will no longer be accurate.

In either case, not trying to bore you with the details. The short answer is that unfortunately, you have upgraded the phone to a point where it cannot presently be unlocked. It is likely there will not be an unlock for the baseband in the 4.1 iOS any time in the near future, based on historical release schedules.

Take steps to prepare for staying on the jailbreak train (get your 4.1 SHSH, read up on the FAQs so that you do not make the same mistake or style of mistake again in the future), and that's pretty much the best you can do at this point.
