I hate to say I had this problem with redsn0w on 4.1 and ended up just using limera1n to jailbreak because I couldn't find a way around it. Some people recommend setting the CPU Affinity to CPU 0 only, and also running the app in compatibility mode -- but neither of them solved the issue for me...

I don't recommend limera1n because you have to spend time afterwards cleaning up geohot's mess and unhacktivating and re-hactivating/activating, and at this point I don't believe limera1n jailbreaks 4.2.1, but I digress...

Weird, what OS / redsn0w version did you experience this with? Can you replicate this reliably?

    Windows 7 Ultimate x64
iOS 4.1 (upgraded from 4.0.1, not set up as new, I know, I know )
redsn0w 0.9.6b1 and b2 (if I recall correctly, it was a while ago)

I tried on two separate machines, three different ways -- I tried Windows x64 w/ redsn0w on my desktop, tried Windows x64 w/ redsn0w on my laptop, then tried my OS X VM (which has worked for many other things) and got the same. Admittedly, I'm not sure if redsn0w will work properly on a VM.

Since then, I haven't tried anything else other than limera1n, so the issue may very well be fixed in the latest redsn0w. If need be, I can take a backup, restore 4.1 (got all my SHSH's, of course) and try with the latest redsn0w that works for 4.1 and report back?

I have had the same issue on Windows 7 home premium (64 bit). This is what I did to get it working.

Right clink on redsn0w.exe and select "troubleshoot compatibility". It will suggest that it is compatible with windows xp service pack 2 and will give you an option to run it in that mode. After that right click again on redsn0w.exe and select "Run as Administrator".

Some people have reported that when they right click they were able to select the option to run in XP mode. But I didn't have that option...
