    Default Problems with pwning 3GS

Hello everyone, i have the old bootrom 3GS factory unlocked and last night i made a custom 4.0 with pwnagetool 4.0. However, there is a problem, i couldnt restore the phone with the custom firmware, i kept trying and trying then i gave up and updated the phone with the stock 4.0 through itunes 9.2 using a windows computer. I have a factory unlocked phone so i didnt care. Now my question is can i still restore it with the custom made 4.0 firmware made through pwnagetool? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

The 3GS must be pwned in order to restore a custom firmware. This means if you have restored a stock Apple firmware, you must downgrade to 3.1.2 and use redsn0w to jailbreak, then create the custom firmware in PwnageTool, and then upgrade to that from a jailbroken OS.

People get lost in the concept here, but I'll try and explain as clearly as possible.

    Jailbreak is not Pwn.

Jailbreaking allows third party apps to install on the phone, like Cydia and SBSettings, etc. redsn0w does this, Spirit does this, blackra1n does this, restoring a PwnageTool created firmware does this.

Pwning removes the SHSH restriction from firmware installs and allows custom firmware to be installed in recovery mode. It effectively lifts all of the firmware flashing restrictions. The only programs that do this presently are redsn0w and PwnageTool, and redsn0w does NOT pwn a 4.0 iOS 3GS at present.

my phone was pwned befor with pwnagetool for 3.1.2 so i thought a custom firmware of 4.0 with pwnagetool should get installed with no problems. I do have SHSHs saved for 3.1 and 3.1.2 on sauriks server. I just dont know how to downgrade using the SHSHs, i would appreciate the extra help. thanks

Hrm, if you were pwned before it really should have worked. To downgrade to 3.1.2 using the SHSH on saurik's server, edit your hosts file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts on Windows, /private/etc/hosts or /etc/hosts on Mac OS X) and add the following line:

    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
Once that is done, open iTunes back up, plug your phone in, hold shift and click Restore, point to the 3.1.2 OFW and restore. If you get the error about the device not being eligible for the requested build, ping gs.apple.com and make sure it resolves to the IP address above. Once that's complete, use redsn0w to jailbreak, then you should be able to restore the 4.0 custom firmware -- so long as you have an old bootrom device.

OFW = official firmware, CFW = custom firmware. Sorry for the confusion.

Downgrade to 3.1.2 official with the SHSH on file, then redsn0w, then try the pwnage custom firmware again.

To edit the file, make sure you launch the notepad process as an administrator, or alternately, turn UAC entirely off and reboot, then edit the file, turn UAC back on and reboot.
