Weird Issue, Baseband not Upgraded after updating form 4.0.1 to 4.2.1

I'm having problems with an iphone 4, 4.0.1 and baseband 01.59.00 never jailbroken.
The camera shutter is frozen, every time I try to use the camera it wont let me, not even other camera apps.
Ive tried every single method I googled and still frozen, so I gave up and decided to restore it to 4.2.1 since this is my wife phone and doesn't care about unlock or jailbreak Ill gave it a try.
Surprisingly the phone is running 4.2.1 and baseband 01.59.00 and functions perfectly but the stupid camera shutter still not working and thus the camera still unusable.

Any thoughts on this?? How come the baseband wasn't updated??
Any idea in how to fix the shutter problem??

Did you upgrade rather than restore (these are separate buttons in iTunes)?

Also did you ever run tiny umbrella on this computer? It modifies the hosts file to redirect shsh requests via Cydia.

These two items together could explain what you experienced.

I had used umbrella earlier when reestoring another iPhone to 4.0.1, and I did click on restore and this gets even weirder because the restore failed ( but progress bar went all the way) iTunes showed and error and I had to use umbrella to kick the phone out of it's lethargic mode and voila the iPhone was running 4.2.1 , 1.59 bb and all of the data (apps,contacts, etc) was still on the phone, I was supposed to sync the iPhone with another computer to get the Data back since the one I used doesn't have a backup of that phone nor ever sync. And again the camera shutter still stuck and gotta be something corrupting the photo gallery. I was going to restore it again but since I thought this was an act of god haha decided to leave the iphone in peace.
I'm so tempted in trying to restore my iPhone (4.0.1, 1,59 jailbroken) to see if mine stays in the same baseband but I'm afraid it wont happen again and I'll loose my current bb.

This is actually expected behavior. The iPhone 4 now uses SHSH on the baseband flashing for the phone as well, so if you're using any of the man-in-the-middle style interceptors (e.g., if you've manually modified your hosts file to point to saurik's server, or if you've used tinyumbrella and it has modified your hosts file), the restore of the iOS will complete, but the restore of the baseband will fail. You will need to use TinyUmbrella to kick out of recovery mode, but at this point, you would have upgraded the iOS without upgrading the baseband.

Note that this ONLY works on the iPhone 4 -- the 3G/S do not behave the same way.

This is all related to the fact that Apple implemented an SHSH check in the baseband signing process, and unlike the standard iOS SHSH (which is based on a unique, but static identifier), the baseband SHSH is generated with a random number, so the SHSH response is only valid for that one request. As such, any 'in the middle' servers will fail as they cannot store the SHSH / respond with a legit SHSH.

In any case, what you're describing is behavior by design -- if you want to upgrade the baseband for any reason (I don't think it will solve your camera issues), you can remove the line from your hosts file that is pointing to saurik's server and re-flash 4.2.1, that will update the baseband.

before you rush to restore, you must understand and take things into consideration

1. You did not answer Olethros' question: Did you UPDATE or did you RESTORE ?

2. Using TinyUmbrella 's start TSS server on the iphone4 (with stock firmware 4.2.1) WILL put your phone in a loop .... BE CAREFUL.

3. Using TinyUmbrella's start TSS server on the iphone4 (with stock firmware 4.1) WILL be ok and won't update your baseband (provided you have 4.1 SHSH). This method works only with firmware 4.1 AND NOT 4.2.1

4. Olethros' question is the key here !!!

5. DO NOT USE firmware 4.2.1 with tinyUmbrella to RESTORE in an attempt to preserve your baseband !!!

I was unaware -- does this mean that users on 4.1 or lower trying to upgrade to 4.2.1 and retain their baseband cannot use this method? I was to understand that if they were on 4.1 they could use this method to upgrade to 4.2.1 and not have any problems. I vaguely recall hearing something about how iOS 4.2.1 checks baseband revision and doesn't play nice unless the baseband is x or higher -- is that what would be encountered here? Someone in another thread was discussing something similar so I want to ensure that what I've said won't get their phone into a bootloop. :fail

Wording is very important here.
You said upgrade , upgrade how ? By a RESTORE or UPDATE
If you do a RESTORE, you will be stuck.
If you do an UPDATE, you will probably be fine. I personally have not test it so i cannot confirm it.
Olethros - am i correct with that statement ?

People don't bother to distinguish RESTORE & UPDATE so precise wording / explanation is very very important

Yes, just be extra careful at this point with iphone4.
When i said bootloop, that will occur and for those without 4.1 SHSH then they will be forced to restore to 4.2.1 (without gs.apple.com redirect or without tinyumbrella) which WILL UPDATE the baseband.

For those with 4.1 SHSH, they can simply DFU and restore. With that said, readers should exercise EXTRA caution if they don't understand the technical jargons. DO NOT mess around with 4.2.1 firmware at this point IF you don't understand all the implications.

I've seen quite a few reports that the "update" to 4.2.1 in conjunction with TinyUmbrella's TSS Server works in the same way as previously - 1004 error (ie you need to use Tiny Umbrella to exit recovery mode)

Haven't personally tested either scenario and musclenerd threw a cat amongst the pigeons with a comment on twitter about it being a myth that there is a baseband check in the 4.2.1 restore. What I think he means is it's not a baseband check but instead something else.

There is definitely something bad happening when people restore to 4.2.1 with TinyUmbrella's TSS server. Don't try it!

There is an unofficial Pwnagetool Bundle that supposedly patches this out (it doesn't do a proper jailbreak or install Cydia, the only function of the bundle is to allow you to restore to 4.2.1 whilst preventing baseband update). I have not had time to test this yet...
