Tetheredboot: I'm Missing the KernalCache file in my Custom Restore File!

Holy cow, that's a sentence I never imagined myself typing.

If you're someone who can give me advice on performing a tetheredboot on a 3GS iPhone (iOS 4.3.5), THANK YOU in advance for reading this.

I've just successfully jailbroken my 3GS iPhone with PwnageTool 4.3.3. I then restored my most recent iPhone backup. All seemingly successful. Now, I'm trying a Tethered Boot.

Unfortunately, the Firmware/dfu folder in my custom restore .ipsw-turned-.zip file only seems to contain two of the same file:

iBSS.n88ap.RELEASE.dfu

...instead of both files required for a tetheredboot:

iBSS.n88ap.RELEASE.dfu
and
kernelcache.release.n88

So, the latter file (kernalcache) is the one I'm missing. But I don't know why it's missing.

And because of this, I haven't been able to perform the final step of accessing those files in my Terminal and performing the tetheredboot.

The custom firmware file that I used to restore my iPhone with was called:

iPhone2,1_4.3.5_8L1_Custom_Restore.ipsw

Does that look like the right file? I'm wondering if I need to somehow start over and re-build the file (with Pwnage), in order to create one that contains both of the files that are necessary for the tethered boot.

I am also planning to unlock this phone, although I haven't yet. The phone is from the US and I am hoping to use it in Germany, where I just moved.

Try looking in the root of your IPSW, the kernelcache is normally located there not under Firmware/dfu

Hi Olethros -- Thanks for your reply! I was able to find the kernalcache file - hooray! - but alas, it didn't work in my Terminal window. I got this error:

dyld: unknown required load command 0x80000022

Do you think I'd be correct in starting over? My phone is in DFU mode, so my plan is to just re-download everything (IPSW file, bundle file, tetheredboot file, and PwnageTool 4.3.3) and run Pwnage again. At least it'll be quicker, now that I have a better idea of what I'm doing!

It's possible that the tethered boot binary is compiled for a different base OS X level or is compiled x64 only.
What OS are you trying to do this from? I recall I had problems ages back with a tethered boot binary compiled as x64 only by msft.guy (my laptop can only support 32 bit)

My iPhone 3GS is on OS 4.3.5. My MacBook is 10.5.8. Can you tell from that info if perhaps I'm having the same 64 versus 32 bit problem?

I thought about downgrading to an older OS on the iPhone but now, unfortunately, it won't restore at all (it's in DFU mode and I'm getting an error that reads "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600)."

Works for me on 10.6.8 (32 bit)

I'm pretty sure the author missed a compiler flag which prevents the binary working on 10.5.x

You're working with second hand copies of tools - the real guy who compiled this is msft.guy - https://github.com/msftguy/syringe/downloads

All you can do is try and bug msft.guy to compile this again with -no_compact_linkedit in the compile options. Or compile it yourself.
