Safe to Restore to 4.0.1 stock IPSW?

Hi Everyone,

I just got ahold of an unlockable 3gs with 4.0.1 from a friend. I was able to jailbreak with jailbreakme and unlock with UltraSn0w.

Currently it has all of my friends contacts/photos/apps on it and I'd like to restore and load up the backup of my now defunct 3g phone's info from an iTunes sync backup to get back my information.

I have downloaded the 4.0.1 ipsw from apple. Now my question is, is it safe to restore the phone in iTunes (Win/10.0.0.68) by holding down shift and selecting the downloaded stock 4.0.1 ipsw? Most importantly will it maintain the unlockable 05.13.04 baseband?

Is there anything I have to be aware of as far as:
1) activation?
2) jailbreak?
3) ultrasn0w unlock?

Also, let me know if there is a preferred method (possibly using Sn0wbreeze?) to restore to any of the i0S 4.x while maintaining my baseband and ability to unlock.

Okay

You have skipped over a very important step. Do you have a SHSH on file with Cydia for 4.0.1 (or older) for this particular 3GS?

Without this, you CANNOT ever restore to stock original 4.0.1 IPSW

I understand that you want to get rid of the previous owner's files, but DO NOT use "erase all content and settings". This will wipe the OS and you likely have no way to restore iOS 4.0.1

Before you ask.. yes there is probably a way to remove the prior user's settings but not remove the OS. I have posted some theories but I have not been able to test anything yet.

After messing around with it for a while and doing some research I came up with a solution:

I was able to restore my files etc from my backup in iTunes without a restore. This did not effect the firmware at all and on reboot all of my stuff was there from the backup and ultrasn0w and cydia were still there.

Other notes:
I had saved my SSH blobs, but it wasn't working, even with the hosts file changes (tried this first), or using tinyumbrella locally. Every restore (DFU-mode included) failed with various unkown errors. From what I can tell from my quick research (READ: this is possibly inaccurate) that since the phone was just jailbroken yesterday, 9/27/2010, that the SSH blobs are not signed by apple so I can't use them to update or restore. Apple stopped signing 4.0.1. blobs sometime in August.

For now though, mission accomplished. I'll just stick with 4.0.1 until the Dev Team creates a pwnage tool that supports everything I need on a newer firmware.

Glad you tried to do some research on your own. Also good approach, stick with 4.0.1 for now.

Common SHSH misconceptions (all are incorrect)

1. the SHSH blobs somehow originate from or are stored on the iPhone
2. SHSH blobs are related to the iOS version that you are running right now.
3. You actually need to have the phone connected to a computer to backup SHSH blobs (partly true on the iPhone 4)
4. You need to be jailbroken before you can backup your SHSH blobs
5. SHSH blobs are only important to jailbreakers or unlockers

If your friend did not save SHSH blobs earlier, then you can only have saved SHSH blobs for 4.1 (which are useless right now, but will be very useful in the future) see SHSH - The iPhone Wiki for an explanation of SHSH and an overview of the cutoff dates for obtaining SHSH blobs for a specific iOS version.
