Sprint using CDMA and iDEN technologies. iPhone 4, uses GSM technology and may not be compatible with Sprint network.
alphaalpha is 100% correct. The currently released models of the iPhone 4 are NOT capable of roaming onto a CDMA network, regardless of whether or not they are carrier locked. When the Verizon iPhone 4 is released in Februrary, this answer may change, but as Verizon does not use SIM cards -- you may still be out of luck.
The iPhone 4 from Verizon will almost certainly work on Sprint (might require some kind of unofficial unlock). As n1ckn4m3 said, the verizon iPhone 4 is a different model than the GSM iPhone 4 that is sold by every other carrier. The GSM version and CDMA version have different chips inside, they are not inter-compatible.
Maybe with the iPhone 5, Apple will offer one model that works on both networks worldwide. This is pure speculation for now.
Your UK phone will only work on AT&T or (2G only) on T-Mobile in the USA.
