Thanks for the response. Where can I find the instructions for redsn0w to do the same. Also, at this point, what is the iOS on my phone? Is it still iOS 4.1 or iOS 5? I am asking so I know what to search for when I look for instructions.
thanks in advance.
Quick and dirty:
How to Create Custom Firmware IPSW with RedSn0w | iPhoneHeat
As far as what version is on your phone, I hate to say I do not know. You should be able to use something like TinyUmbrella or f0recast to determine what it is.
thanks for the response.
I have tinyumbrella. I have tried the "exit recovery" and the "fix recovery" option. i still have error 10 using redsn0w. Are there specific instructions on what I can do with tinyumbrella to get my phone back?
Only mentioned TinyUmbrella because you said you didn't know what version of iOS you were using -- that's all I felt it would be useful for in the current context.
I expect you will need to use redsn0w to create a custom 5.0.1 IPSW, put the phone into Pwned DFU mode, then shift-restore the no_bb firmware you made with redsn0w. Is that what you're trying that's netting the error 10?
Thanks for the response. the good news is that the issue is solved.
After reading your earlier response, I got very scared and desperate.
I started trying all kinds of different combinations. from 'exit recovery' to 'fix recovery' in tinyumbrella, iReb, various separate instructions on trying to restore with sn0wbreeze or redsn0w. trying different computers with iTunes on it. nothing was working. i kept on getting stuck at error 10.
i finally got tired and dozed off all night. I woke up in the morning and despondently tried one last time. and it worked! I upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 using sn0wbreeze. then used redsn0w to JB and finally Ultrasn0w to unlock. And it is untethered as well!
I do not know what I was messing up with earlier. maybe too many tries and not leaving enough time in-between? I am guessing I was not getting into the PWNED DFU state correctly even though iReb and redsn0w and sn0wbreeze (tried all three) were claiming I was in that state. I do not know whether thats true or not...its just a guess based on the number of tries and none of my software versions changed from the previous day. logically, the error has to be something 'Manual" on my side (user error).
all ends well and I am very happy!!! i have a untethered iOS 5.0.1 on 3GS working.
cheers! and thank for hanging tight with me.
Glad to hear it got fixed! If you're in a generous mood, please donate a buck or two to the forums. It takes volunteer time to keep the answers flowing and it costs real volunteer money to keep the servers run every month. :) Beyond the peace of mind and good warm fuzzy feeling you'll get for helping out, you also get a special donor title and access to the donor's forum...... Hi there, I am new here. I think I may have found somebody who knows what they're talking about. It's been about 7 hours now of constant trying to get my iphone 3gs working again. Like many of the others i have the same error (10) when using shift restore with the NO_BB IPSW.
I'm on 06.15.00 and I have updated my itunes to the latest version 9 something. Trying to get onto IPSW 5.0 having previously managed to jailbreak on 4.1, but had problems getting service.
I too have used both sn0wbreeze and redsn0w latest versions, and used i-REB to get into PWN DFU mode. When creating the NO_BB file and trying to enter PWN DFU mode in redsn0w, it crashes redsn0w, as do other options i try in redsn0w. It appears to be restoring but stops when the apple logo is on with the bar only about 1/5 of the way. The same happens when using snowbreeze.
This is what my host looks like:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
# For example:
# 22.214.171.124 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 126.96.36.199 x.acme.com # x client host
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost
# 127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com
Other than this I do not know what else to try as to why I keep getting errors. Before I got the (10) i kept getting (1600) but that has stopped now.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I just read the sticky on your page about restore problems so i apologize for rushing into the post.
Here are some further details:
Windows XP SP2

here is the log which i pasted onto a site..

I created custom ipsw 5.0.1 with redsn0w 0.9.10b5 tool. When I try to restore in Pwned DFU mode with TinyUmbrella running (since Apple no longer sign 5.01) got an Error 11. I believe it is because iTunes can not find the bbfw file in the custom ipsw? I have "ice3_01.59.00_Boot_02.06.RELEASE.bbfw" which I extracted from the old FW 4.01 ipsw. Can I just add the file into the custom 5.0.1 ipsw? Will it work or will it screw up the restore and the phone?
I have a locked iPhone 4.
