How to get into DFU mode With A Broken Home Button (iOS 4.2.1)

A friend and I have a broken home button so we decide to jailbreak it so we can get around the home button using activator, but unfortunately we can't jailbreak without putting it to dfu mode, which requires the button sequence.
We have tried numerous methods to get our iphone 3g to go in to dfu mode. We have tried going into the firmware and trying to rename the files and we get "not implemented", (source from HOW TO: Put The iPhone In DFU Mode And Jailbreak, Even If Your Home Or Power Button Is Broken | FSMdotCOM) we have tried running the app manually from the start->run method (source from Enter DFU mode without using iPhone power or home buttons) and many more. All attempts have reached a dead end.


PLEASE HELP US REWARD MAYBE GIVEN.... Not Really :D No, but seriously we need help.

Its a iPhone 3G running on iOS 4.2.1

Ok.. the modify firmware technique should have worked (you should have tried to modify and restore a 3.1.x IPSW)

What will also work is to do the following:

Downgrade to stock 3.1.2
Jailbreak with blackra1n
Restore a pre-pwned custom IPSW (3.x IPSW will definitely work, you might need a non standard pwnagetool bundle to make this work on iOS 4.2.1 - but it is in theory possible)

We thought about downgrading but dont you need to put the iphone into dfu mode first?
If not then could you show us any links that could show us how to downgrade?

If the phone is still booting normally, you don't have 6.15 baseband and can be directed in iTunes, then you can downgrade without first entering DFU or recovery mode
