Adventures in iOS Data recovery
Okay, I'm new to the world of JBing etc but I learned a little bit in the last couple of days out of necessity. It would be very, very awesome if someone(z) could help me with this. I would owe it to this Hackint0sh community big time.
Like most joes, I jot down my new jillion-dollar startup ideas on the built in Notes app. I've been on the road this year without a workdesk or getting organized, so I skimped on docking and syncing notes to a cloud. Given that frickin unwavering law, my iBeeyatch suddenly went into Recovery Mode (not a DFU mode loop) on its own overnight while charging from my wall (I'm guessing the reason is where I live right now, humidity levels outside hit 40% which, given microdroplet condensation going inside an A/Ced building, the water sensor got triggered, but that's just speculation.)
Itunes will only give me the option to restore which will of course wipe it, so I've started down the road to Data Recovery and got a bit stuck. I'm wondering where to go from here and what the next step is!
First, iPhone Explorer/Touchcopy couldnt see it. I then tried FixRecovery, which showed successful at delivering greenpois0n but eventually it said 'unable to mount fs' and it went back into RM. Onto TinyUmbrella as it too has a show/save SSH feature, but shows nothing, there's also a built in Fix Recovery button that basically said code sent, wait to reboot, and the device just stayed in DFU mode as if nothing happened.
Then I discovered iFaith O:) 1.2.1, which failed the first time (UNSUPPORTED DEVICE! ABORTING) but a second time around I was singing Halleluljah, limera1n broke through and got blobs which I saved (<ios>4.1 (8B117)</ios><model>iPhone 3GS</model>
<board>n88ap</board>...). I figured that if I just use O:) to make a signed ipsw using the shsh, phone in pwned dfu, and shift restore, I'll lose the data. This then led me to sites like Zdiarski's and hardcore forensics :woz: (exploting with iLiberty and using coded scripts/payloading a custom IPSW that doesn't wipe NAND on restore etc). Along the way I stumbled on several old threads here with cases similar to mine http://www.hackint0sh.org/f201/168333.htm -- and for all of them the solution you guys suggested then revolved around Msftguy's. Mostly iPhone hacking: Data recovery: not just for iBoot-pwned devices and Mostly iPhone hacking: Booting SSH ramdisk on new devices.
Some of their steps are greek to me and they're getting outdated, so I wanted to check with you all if you think given what I've said this solution does indeed apply to my case or if there's something different/newer i should be looking at before following it into its dark abyss :D
Specs: <ios>4.1 (8B117)</ios> <model>iPhone 3GS</model> <board>n88ap</board>...stock, factory unlocked GSM, and never-been-JB'ed before (though I don't know if any of the exploits I tried above effecitvely JBed it).
