You need to be able to restore to OS 3.1.2 before pwnagetool can direct jailbreak. The hole that is used to direct jailbreak the 3GS was closed with the 3.1.3 update.

This is why such a big deal was made about getting a 3.1.2 SHSH blob backed up before Apple stopped signing 3.1.2

I did back up blobs. so itunes will allow me select stock 3.1.2 and goes through the restore process but when it gets to around 70% then i get an error 1015 message and dumps me back to recovery screen... not sure how to resolve this other than restoring to 3.1.3

See http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/130802.htm for details on how to post your restore logs.

1015 is not a problem - it just means it can't downgrade baseband. Simply exit with iRecovery redsn0w lite or iREB (which we don't support here)

As I said, that 1015 is because you can't downgrade baseband.

To fix this: run rslite or irecovery.

    get rslite: http://iphwn.org/rslite102semi.zip

    Run rslite via Terminal.app:

    Then type:

    Code:
    setenv auto-boot true
    saveenv
    reboot
You should get an output like the listing below.

    % rslite
rslite v0.2 – by the iPhone Dev Team, 2009.
    –THIS IS AN UNSUPPORTED TOOL–

    Connecting…
    [Recovery] setenv auto-boot true
    [Recovery] saveenv
    [Recovery] reboot
