my iphone 3gs just got stolen.
Bummer, because I wasn't planning on upgrading to the iphone 4 so I didn't go buy one.... now it appears most will likely be 4.0.2 and if I've done my reading... that can't be jailbroken.
So, if I'm at a store, and I pick up a box, is there any way to tell if it 4.0.1 or 4.0.2????
Thanks

No firm guarantee - the serial number can give you a clue. Think if it begins with xx032 or lower then it should be okay. However - this is only a guideline and some xx033 iPhones have shipped with 4.0.1 (more reports recieved of week 33 iPhones shipping with 4.0.2 though)

That has nothing to do with what the OP asked -- please keep it on topic when possible. Whether or not he finds a stock pile is no help to his original question of how to determine whether a device is running 4.0.1 or 4.0.2.
Olethros is correct - as far as is currently known, if the 3rd, 4th, and 5th numbers on your S/N for an iPhone 4 are 032 or lower, you can be reasonably assured that it will come with 4.0.1. If they are 033, you are in shaky territory -- most of the reports for week 33 are that it comes with 4.0.2.
I was just at the Apple store yesterday and verified with someone who just purchased it that they had a week 29 phone, so depending on your location, you may find them with some backlogged stock. After the initial wave of orders, a lot of stores ordered a LOT of phones -- then with 'antennagate', people stopped buying as quickly. I'd assume this has something to do with why they would have stock of such 'old' phones.
Your mileage may vary, of course, but using the S/N should be a solid way to determine the versioning prior to purchase.

Just bought an iphone4 32Gb. Serial XX034, and it came with 4.0.2. So this confirms it.
Now waiting for a new jailbreak solution
