Default Need some help please with 4.2.1 jailbreak

Attempted 4.2.1 jailbreak last night on iphone 4. Baseband preserved at 1.59 using tinyumbrella ok. So managed to shift/restore 4.2.1 ipsw onto phone and got error indicating hadn't worked so then used greenpois0n to jailbreak. Unfortunately didn't realise that there is no hactivate so stuffed. So used Redsnow 0.9.6b6 and this worked. Managed to unlock and good to go. So this morning as I inadvertently asked itunes to restore my latest backup I decided to reset the iphone in settings etc and now I'm stuck. The phone attemps to boot but hangs at the greenpoison logo. I decided therefore to try and re-jailbreak with redsn0w but the problem is trying to get the phone into dfu. As soon as I power it off and plug the usb cable in it reboots and the dfu procedure doesn't seem to work as limera1n doesn't initiate properly. I seem to have managed to get it a couple of times as the pineapple comes on, but on these occasions it hasn't finished and hung at activating. Is there a surefire way of getting into dfu such that I can press the buttons in the correct sequence. Can anyone advise, or even explain a different method.thanks in advance.

Plug the phone into your computer via the Dock Connector/USB cable.
Hold down power/sleep and home until the phone reboots (screen goes black), start counting from the time the screen goes black.
Hold both buttons for 5 seconds, then release the power/sleep button but keep holding the home button.
The screen should stay black the entire time. If you see the apple logo come up, you waited too long before releasing the power/sleep button.
It may take up to 15 seconds for the computer to detect the phone is in DFU mode (especially on windows)

You are going to need to restore the iPhone to 4.2.1 again (repeat the procedure you did before)

You said: "I decided to reset the iphone in settings". You are not clear about exactly which option you took, it could have been one of three different options.

If you chose "erase all content and settings" then you definitely need to restore the 4.2.1 OS (taking care to prevent updating baseband)

If you chose "reset all settings" or "reset network settings" then you might be able to get the phone working without needing a complete restore. I still recommend you restore the phone to 4.2.1 (taking steps to preserve the baseband) and set it up as new. Don't restore from iTunes backup.

Also if I put the phone in restore mode (Ihave a usb cable and itunes icon on the phone) I get the message "itunes could not contact the iphone software update because you arte not connected to the internet"

Force your device into recovery mode (hold down sleep/power and home until phone reboots, then release sleep/power straight away but keep on holding home)

    Then follow this procedure.

This is no good. As I said in my last note the device is not recognized in itunes. I'm aware of how to preserve the baseband, the problem I have is not being able to restore in itunes as I have no internet connection. I also need to use redsn0w as greenpois0n has no hactivate

You have erased the operating system. There is no other choice but to restore the operating system. You NEED to use the following tools:
TinyUmbrella/TSS server, greenpois0n and then redsn0w. This will work.
You ONLY need internet access if you have not previously used TinyUmbrella to save a 4.2.1 SHSH for your iPhone on this computer.

iTunes WILL recognise your device if you force it into either DFU or recovery mode - I have explained how to do this. It is harder to do when you have wiped the OS, but it is still possible.

To enter recovery or DFU mode you only need two things:
Power to the iPhone via 30 pin USB cable.
Correct timing (when to release the sleep/power button) - the timing is different when you can't start by shutting down the phone first.

Ok, I think I understand your point but as my laptop is not on the internet I can not use itunes. I have proved this by using a desktop at work which is connected and.when I put the phone into recovery it Itune detects it and gives me the option to restore . Unfortunately tiny umbrella won't run on this due to the desktop missing some java files so worried my baseband won't be preserved. Very frustrating

I dont think your making it to dfu bro, it is pretty tricky timing! Verify you are in dfu (screen will stay black even when pressing buttons on device)

Olethros, cant he use pwnagetool to create 4.2.1 and install from dfu and save BB?!
