need help trying to restore my iphone but i get an error
I have a iphone4 thats is on firmware 4.0.1
I was trying to restore it to its factory settings in itunes but i get
"the iphone cannot be restored an unknown error occurred 3194"
After doing some research I downloaded ishshit from cydia and email the shsh blog to my email...im now stuck on where to go abouts in restoring my iphone to its original settings and i believe i did save my shsh original when i jailbreak my iphone by clicking on making my life easier in cydia but im unsure....in cydia it shows SHSH: 4.0.1.4.1 and etc
BTW i do not need to jailbreak the phone again...i just want to restore it to the latest version regardless of the baseband upgrade
please help
thanks

You need to make sure your hosts file is modified to either talk to Cydia or to TinyTSS running locally on your computer (part of The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella)
How you do this depends on whether you are on Mac or windows and whether you use TinyUmbrella or directly against Cydia.
An old/out of date guide is Hack that Phone - iPhone 3G S: Restoring "forbidden" firmware

Both techniques I described work on windows. Did you actually read the links/do any research before replying to me?
You said in your original post that you wanted to restore 4.0.1 - that is what I answered.
Now you have changed your requirements and you say you just want to update to latest iOS (4.2.1 in case you don't know) without a jailbreak.
To answer your new question. I dont recommend you take this option (as there is no way back and you lose the ability to unlock - which reduces the resale value of the phone.
What you want to do is possible but I would recommend a restore instead of an update. Plus you should check your hosts file to make sure you have no entries that mention gs.apple.com before you try to update.

Sorry for the misunderstanding
I would just like to restore it to the latest firmware as I need to return the phone to the apple store...reason being the LCD backlight is damaged on the phone including part of the microphone which it sometimes does not work
I was told that a new phone will be replaced so I guess I would be getting a new phone but then they could possibly be just repairing the phone
I need to either restore it to 4.0.1 or restore it to the latest so that it erases the fact that I jailbreak it

As I explained earlier, you can only restore to 4.0.1 if you have saved a SHSH.
If you're trying to get the device replaced under warranty, it's often a good idea to restore to 4.2.1 (only special step is if you have ever run TinyUmbrella or manually modified your hosts file - you need to remove entries that point to gs.apple.com before you restore)
