    Default Must-have-help!

My wife's iphone 3g 8gb was dropped and the screen cracked. Replaced the screen and when I powered up it gave me the usb - itunes screen. I tried a restore and got code 1603. Searched and searched the internet (a good bit on this forum) and found iREB. Ran iREB and now I get 1604. Still nada. Reinstalled itunes, cleared sync history, tried with and without sim, tried a different usb, tried a different computer. Have i missed anything? Please help. I have run out of attempts and ideas.

You trying to restore stock apple IPSW or a custom IPSW (made with pwnagetool or sn0wbreeze?)

Just a stock apple ipsw. It had been upgraded to os4.1 just before the problem. At this point I'm willing to do anything to get it back up and running for her.

Publish (this does not mean copy and paste into multiple replies here!!!) the restore log http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/130802.htm

Also take a look at this Error 1603 When Restoring iPhone in iTunes

Also please don't use iREB. It's not going to help you.

I think I got the idea...

    First Attempt
    Second Attempt
    Third Attempt

    • iTunes version 10.0.1
    • iPhone os4.1 before restore attempt
    • Windows XP

Battery drained all of the way (or close to it). Installed new screen. Turned on iphone got Apple boot logo then connect to USB logo. Connected to itunes and to restore and got code 1603 Iphone 'iphone' could not be restored. Tried ALL recommendations from Apple Support in addition to ideas from various forums and websites. Same result with same failure code every time.

Tried a mac? Different USB cable? Older version of iOS? Reinstall iTunes?

You are failing to get to the point in the restore where the iPhone boots off the ramdisk and takes over the restore process.

Try: the special DFU mode from redsn0w 0.9.6b2 and a custom IPSW made with pwnagetool 4.1

It could be a hardware problem also, maybe the dock connector board in the iPhone is damaged.

I tried a different USB cable, older iOS, reinstalling itunes, and I installed a known good dock. All to no prevail. I don't have a Mac or access to one so that's not an option. There is no pwnagetool for Windows yet is there?

Thanks for your help by the way. If nothing else I have learned a lot.

Just did. Window says "your device is being kicked out of recovery mode" and it has said that for about 30 minutes now. I'm thinking I have a shiny paperweight...

Recboot and all the other exit recovery mode type tools won't help when you are in this kind of state.

When you replaced the screen, did you disconnect more than just the screen? Did you check the dock connector board was undamaged?
