Migrating from a bricked 3gs to an iPhone 4 at 1.59.00
My 3gs bricked itself with a 1002 error (sadly) so I bought a used JB/UL iPhone 4. The 4 is currently at iOS 4.0.2 and BB 1.59.00 and I pestered the seller until he told me that he had saved hashes for 4.2.1, 4.3, 4.3.3., 4.3.5. (I have verified this with Cydia). My 3gs was running iOS v4.3.3 (Pwnag; ultrasn0w, 5.13.04 BB) when it died. The new 4 arrived with 4.0.2. The first thing I did was to run TinyUmbreall and both retrieve the shsh blobs from Cydia as well as save the currently available ones (only iOS 5.x's). I have not sync'd yet and have some questions before I do:
- What will happen when I sync without changing the OS version? Will I get the union of apps currently on the 4 plus those in my iTunes repository? Will running PKGbackup to restore settings work since it saved settings most recently at 4.3.3?
- I assume I should NOT Restore from Backup until I have installed a custom 4.3.3 on the 4 since the current backup was at 4.3.3 and I believe Olethros said that OSs are only upwardly compatible. I trust you can't having 4.3.3 settings on a 4.0.2 iOS is not a good idea. I'd like to do all this in steps.
- Soon I'll just upgrade to 4.3.3, (with the usual Pwnag, TU, ultrasn0w, etc.) Restore from Backup in iTunes from the backup of my 3gs from a few days ago (at 4.3.3) and restore settings with PKGbackup and should hopefully be running everything as before except on a new platform.
Will this work? Have I missed anything?
John

As you have already understood, you will NOT be able to sync a 4.3.3 backup onto an 4.0.2 phone. iTunes will prevent this.
So.. first things first use iFaith to backup your partial 4.0.2 SHSH blob (just in case)
Your plan is correct but this is a erase & restore (with custom IPSW) not an upgrade. (just to make sure you use the correct terminology)
If you experience poor battery life after the restore, try an erase network settings.
