MIGRATE from iPhone 2G 3.1.2 to iPhone 4G 4.2.1 with Purchased Apps etc ? How? Pls check outlined steps

Please guide me if the following steps are okay or need some fixing before I go ahead.

Using some steps that had outlined from a previous upgrade/ update here..
    http://www.hackint0sh.org/f207/120342.htm

MIGRATE from iPhone 2G 3.1.2 to iPhone 4G 4.2.1 with Purchased Apps etc

    STEPS:

    iPhone 2G 8GB 3.1.2
    - Sync & Backup my iPhone 2G using iTunes 10.1.x & MS Outlook

    1. Sync your iPhone and make sure this includes a full backup. Check in the filesystem to ensure that the filestamps and size reflect this.
    2. Copy (and rename) or zip up (or some other way of making a copy) the whole backup (the folder and it's contents)

    SHSH save using TinyUmbrella

iTunes Synch: Install Purchased Apps, Synch Contacts

I have a few apps that I purchased via iTines that really matter to me and some apps that are Free.
I want to ensure that I can move/install these apps to the iPhone 4. I dont want to Jailbreak etc/ Cydia until I can sync my Purchased Apps.

I am wondering if the following sequence works? or should be altered slightly?
    1. Set up your iPhone 4 as new (Already Done. Setup iPhone 4 as a New Phone in iTunes. This was done for the IMEI based Facrory iTunes Unlock)
    2. Sync your apps, music, contacts etc from iTunes again.
Will the purchased apps get synched here? What steps do I need to follow carefully here? (The whole Authorize/ Deauthorize thing for iTunes Computers & Devices)

Once my Contacts & Apps are A-Ok, I can do Music as well but its not a big deal.

Jailbreak Only using Green Poison for iPhone 4.2.1
    1. Jailbreak using Green Poison
    2. Install Open SSH etc and so on..
SMS Database: Insert via Funbox from Backup.

Another critical item was to Punch in the SMS Database. I am hoping that the 3.1.2 Database wont have any issues when extracted and added to iPhone 4

[*]Use a backup extractor tool to manually extract from the 3.x (upgrade) backup the files you want to preserve.[*]Copy them back to your iPhone with iFunBox or similar. Use SSH/SFT to verify that the permissions are the same.
I am assuming the Backup Extractor still works.

You seem to be on the right track, just a few comments. Wouldn't it be a lot easier if you just restored your iPhone4 from backup of your old phone? This will include contacts, mail, SMS, all your apps data and everything else. The way you're describing you have to sync contacts with outlook and then manually transfer the SMS database, and you won't get your app data. You don't need to bother doing that, use iTunes.

About the applications you have from the AppStore, those will only sync to your new iPhone4 if they appear on your computer, inside iTunes. If you didn't buy then in iTunes and they aren't there, plug your old iphone and sync the apps, then they will appear.

    The apps are in iTunes.

The reason for doing this was because instead of Restore from Backup, the new iPhone has been set as a New phone. This has been recommended by Many to avoid any Old Crap thats sitting on the old iPhone transfer to the new one.

The *only* way for iTunes to migrate your application DATA automatically as well (not just the apps) is to restore from backup or set the iPhone up as a copy of a previous iPhone. It will then sync your data. If you've set the new phone up as a new phone, you'll need to manually migrate the data from the applications as connecting it will ONLY sync the applications themselves.

You can still do this after setting up as new by plugging the device in, right clicking on the device in iTunes, and selecting 'Restore from Backup'.

    Thanks Nick.

Now I saw this thing popup on Cydia about saving the ECID / SHSH etc when it first popped up. But I had some other popups so I wasnt able to do the Server based save via Cyida on Sauriks Server.

    What are my options now?

What are the things I should backup/ save?

Grab a copy of TinyUmbrella and use it to store a copy of all SHSH files you may already have, and every time a new iOS revision comes out, grab your SHSH for it as soon as you can. The window for opportunity on these things can be extremely small and it's a huge benefit to have the SHSHs for any future flashing you'll be doing to the device.

I believe there's a way to re-elect to have Cydia make your life easier, a quick google search tells me you may find the option under the 'Developers Only' links at the bottom of the main Cydia homepage that opens when you launch the app. Even if you get this working, you STILL want to grab a copy of your SHSH files locally yourself. There's a lag between when Cydia requests and receives the SHSH and to ensure you get one every time you need one, it's best to do it yourself with TinyUmbrella.
