I just received two "refurbished" 3GS phones from AT&T that are running 4.2.1 and BB 5.15.04

Given that I have no blobs for these and that I can't go back (and they probably have the new boot rom) is there anything that I can do right now to jailbreak and/or unlock?

    Any prospects for the future?

Yeah, save your 4.2.1 SHSH blobs now. Check the bootrom, query for blobs - refurb means there is a small chance that blobs were saved by a previous owner.

The feedface/limera1n exploit combination will always mean that you can jailbreak 4.2.1 untethered.

I wouldn't recommend the iPad baseband solution for unlock at the moment, save your 4.2.1 blobs and wait for further unlock news once iOS 4.3 is released.

    Thanks again

verified that I have new boot roms (359.3.2) but found that one of the devices did in fact have Blobs stored away at Cydia for 4.1. (and of course I now have them for 4.2.1)

I guess I could downgrade that one phone to 4.1 and at least jailbreak, but there is no way that I've heard of to downgrade the baseband back to an unlockable version at this point. I'll hang out and wait until 4.3 hits and see what you guys come up with.

    Thanks again

You can jailbreak untethered at 4.2.1 with pwnagetool 4.2 or the combination of greenpois0n + redsn0w (to hacktivate only)

oh, you can say you used sn0wbreeze - we don't mind.

However, you left out a vital fact about your specific problem. You are running the iPad baseband. If you followed my instructions in this thread perfectly you would see that there is no mention of upgrading to the iPad baseband.

So.. the problem lies not with my instructions in this thread but your incorrect/invalid interpretation of these instructions.

There is a thread that deals with your specific problem.. http://www.hackint0sh.org/f204/196391.htm please reply in that thread instead of threadjacking other threads.

With sn0wbreeze, we won't help you if it doesn't work. Also we don't like people recommending it as a solution (as it has had significant problems in the past)

OK, let me see if I got this straight, I've been reading a lot:

1: the two 3GS with the new bootroms and the new modem firmwate at 4.2.1 can be jailbroken with Pwnage and a custom build, but there is no unlock (yet) for those phones.

2: the other two 3GS that I have have old bootroms at 4.1 and older (unlockable with Ultrasn0w) can't be upgraded to 4.2.1 while preserving the baseband so I should stick with 4.1 on those until something comes out to either allow me to keep the baseband or to unlock the 4.2.1 baseband

3: the iPhone4 that I have with the original baseband can be upgraded to 4.2.1 and preserve the baseband with the latest TinyUmbrella

4: the two ipads that I have can safely be upgraded to iOS 4.2.1 (not 3G ipads) and then jailbroken with Greenp0ison. On these, I can upgrade via the standard iTunes to the standard 4.2.1 and then jailbreak after upgrade.

I'm getting too many i-devices to keep track of!

    1. yes (but the iPad baseband is an option for unlock. I don't recommend it though.
    2. pwnagetool 4.2 can prevent baseband upgrades for 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4 - so if you have 3GS with an older baseband you can use custom ipsw from pwnagetool 4.2 to go to 4.2.1 without losing the ability to unlock.
    3. es but I would recommend you use pwnagetool 4.2 for this as well (pwnagetool 4.2 will prevent baseband upgrade on the iPhone 4)
    4. Yes (or again you could use pwnagetool - no real advantage but it means using one tool for all your devices)

Thanks, I guess I missed that Pwnage was able to stop baseband upgrading.

I've downloaded and started building all of the ipsw files for the various devices. Now if there was only an ulock for the two new 3GS phones, I'd be good to go.

thanks everyone, as always. you guys rock!
