Default I've tried everything so far, how do I downgrade 4.2.1 to 3.1.3 or even 4.0.1?

This is embarrassing because I'm tech-savvy and normally know what I'm doing or can figure it out by 10 seconds of googling, but this problem is making me pull my hair out. I've spent half my work day on goolging this or trying to find the right mixture of keywords to search on this forum but so far... nothing. I'm trying to unlock an iPhone 3G and the person who gave it to me to work on accidentally upgraded it to 4.2.1. I can't downgrade in iTunes on either Windows or a MacBook. I keep getting the "incompatible" message or the 3194. I've tried changing the hosts files multiple times to multiple different suggestions but so far nothing.

Does anyone have any advice on this or can you at least point me to a non-iTunes program that can downgrade the OS? I remember seeing one a long time ago but I can't find it on google or here.

Thanks, sorry if this is a simple fix but it's just an auuuugh project for me

Not to be a prick, but I need this by tomorrow. I was supposed to have the phone unlocked yesterday but I had it all day today and I have to finish it by tomorrow before she comes back. A one word answer will do, anything that will even help me in my googling would be appreciated.

    Downgrading to 3.1.3 is possible.

3194 means that Apple isn't signing the OS version you are trying to restore. On the 3G, you will get this error with iOS 4.0 through to iOS 4.1

The bad news is that the baseband that ships with 4.2.1 cannot be unlocked by ultrasn0w. Simply upgrading to 4.2.1 will permanently update your baseband to a version that cannot be unlocked.

There is generally no way to downgrade your baseband (that is why you get the 101x error during restore). You can try a long shot and install fuzzyband from Cydia. It works on about 0.0001% of iPhone 3G devices (the ones that were sold in the few weeks after the iPhone 3 was originally released)

Otherwise, you have to use the iPad baseband unlock technique (which has some drawbacks - and also can't be undone)

    To downgrade to 3.1.3
Use TinyUmbrella to "enter recovery mode"
Shift-click restore (option-click on a mac) and browse to iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw downloaded from http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm
The restore will end in an error in the 101x range
Run TinyUmbrella and select "exit recovery mode"
You will be stuck at the "slide for emergency" screen
Use redsn0w 0.9.2 or 0.9.4 and when redsn0w asks for an IPSW, give it: iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw downloaded from http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm
You only need to tick "install cydia"

This will get you downgraded and jailbroken.

I used Tiny Umbrella to enter recovery mode and I used the home button recovery mode and iTunes is still giving me the same crap.

"The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored because the firmware file is incompatible"

I tried it with iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw and even the 3.1.2 and... nothing

Ignore, lock and delete this thread. /facepalm @ me
I was trying to unlock a 3GS, I'm still new to the iphones and couldn't tell between 3G and 3Gs and I ended up spending hours working on the wrong iPhone. I now have two angry customers, woohoo. I got the 3G jailbroken but not unlocked, it won't log onto wifi for some reason

Thread moved to 3GS section and closed as per your request. Glad you worked out why it wasn't working.
