Default iphone4 iOS 4.3.5 baseband 04.10.01 can it be unlocked?

Hi I recently bought a used "unlocked and jailbroken" iphone 4 from the USA. The original carrier was AT&T, and the package came with a Gevey Ultra kit.

I am trying to activate the phone on rogers but so far have not been successful. I understand that neither software nor Gevey cards can unlock this phone. Please let me know if this is no longer the case.

You can unlock your phone with the Gevey Ultra sim interposer. The only choice you have to make is whether you want to do a tethered or untethered unlock. First, I would recommend you install/restore via iTunes a fresh copy of iOS 4.3.5 before going about the unlock. Then you have to make a choice:

    1) Go for the manual (tethered) unlock where you dial "112" every time you power on the iPhone. The process takes 2-4 minutes depending on how fast you are with the process. THIS DOES NOT REQUIRE ANY FORM OF A JAILBREAK.

    2) If you don't want to do the manual unlock where you dial "112" every time you startup your iPhone, YOU HAVE TO JAILBREAK YOUR iPHONE. With a jailbreak, there is an app that does the unlocking process for you automatically so every time you turn on your iPhone the phone is unlocked and the ROGERS carrier name appears on the top left part of the screen.

According to the experts, the jailbreak for iOS 4.3.5 is TETHERED which means you have to be connected to a PC/MAC everytime you turn on the iPhone. Perhaps Olethros can chime in as he is the grandmaster when it comes to this specific subject. Good luck!

You haven't mentioned the baseband on this phone (this can be discovered with TinyUmbrella). It's possible that the previous owner loaded iOS5 beta on this device and if they did not downgrade back to 4.3.5 properly then the beta baseband is still on the device. That could be a reason why Gevey Ultra doesn't work

Also we try to discourage gevey Ultra because it is illegal/unethical to use this utility in pretty much any country except China. This is because even the ultra version you have dials 112 to implement the unlock. 112 is internationally recognised as the standardised emergency number and in most countries will connect you with emergency services (police/ambulance/fire)

I would recommend you firstly find out the correct details regarding the phone, for example is there a 4.3.3 SHSH saved? What baseband does the phone currently have? If it is an iOS5 beta baseband then you still have a short window to downgrade the baseband to a non beta version. Tiny Umbrella is the tool for all this.

Yes 4.3.5 is a tethered jailbreak for the time being.

Hey thank you for the replies. I got tiny umbrella and the phone details are as follows:

    Model: MC318LL/A iphone4
    Firmware: 4.3.5
    Baseband: 04.10.01 - ICE 2_13

So I should look for a tethered unlock program? Any recommendations? I'm a noob, so I apologize for mixing up the terminology. I'd prefer to avoid dialing 112...

Should I save a 4.3.5 SHSH? I'm not sure that 4.3.3 was on the phone previously, but in any event it hasn't been since I've had the phone.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

You're mixing terminology. A jailbreak / tethered jailbreak / untethered jailbreak is NOT the same (nor even similar) to an unlock.

Your phone cannot presently be unlocked via any software method. Your only choice (and it's not a good one, we don't recommend it) would be a Gevey SIM. Not only would it require you to dial 112 every time you needed service (unless you get the Pro model, which STILL DOES THIS, just automatically so you don't have to dial), but when iOS 5.0 comes out, the Gevey SIMs and similar SIM interposers will not continue to function on those firmwares as they have closed the loophole that is being used.

The answer is, you can jailbreak your iPhone using the latest redsn0w or sn0wbreeze, but you cannot unlock it.

Hey thank you for this info.

I had hoped a tethered jailbreak/unlock combo would work but evidently not. I don't want to use the Gevey option, which does not even work for my situation.

Gevey doesn't recognize a sim that I know works... plus I don't want to dial 112 for the various reasons outlined in other posts in this forum.

Looks like I've wasted a bunch of money and will have to go buy another phone.

Yes 4.3.5 is a tethered jailbreak for the time being.
Could you please elaborate on the unethical issue? If I understand the procedure correctly you only dial 112 once lasting 2sec so I don't think it has enough time to connect to the service yet. Is there something else that I've missed?

I am not a techy and am planning to use the ultra Gevey since it doesn't involve in jailbreak. However, I prefer not to use it if it is really unethical.

Your insight and comment is greatly appreciated.

It's illegal to use an emergency number in a non-emergency situation. That alone makes it unethical. Beyond that, it may only be 2 seconds, but for someone in an emergency, that 2 seconds could be the difference between life and death. The call does happen, it does initiate the dialing, which means a the emergency carrier picks up the request. This means that the trunk line that you're using to activate your phone can't be used for someone with a legitimate emergency. That should help you understand the ethical issues with this type of solution. Sure, it could be viewed that this would only be dangerous in a fringe case, but it's not for any single individual to make that decision, imo, when it relates to other people's safety during an emergency. After all that, I again have to point out that it is illegal to use an emergency number for a non emergency purpose.

With regard to iOS 4.3.5 and 04.10.01, no, there has been no update yet on this.
