Default "The iPhone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible"

I'm trying to update my 3G. It's jailbroken and unlocked on 3.0.1 with baseband 04.26.08.

I originally tried to use this:

iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak and Unlock Your iPhone 3G Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.2.1]

tutorial, but the redsn0w link comes back "page not found".

I figured that maybe I would just have to jailbreak and unlocked separately, so I've been trying to follow these two:

iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 4 Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.2.1]
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4253

The problem is, when I try to use shift-Restore in iTunes, it gives me a message, "The iPhone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible".

So far I've been unable to find the answer, but would be grateful if someone would point me in the right direction.

Well, the key issue is that you're following jailbreak instructions for the iPhone 4 when you have an iPhone 3G -- this is a very big discrepancy. The iPhone 4 is completely different from the hardware level and the jailbreaks, iOS revisions, etc. are not compatible between the devices. If you followed the iPhone 4 steps, you most likely downloaded the iPhone 4's iOS revision -- this would result in the error you provided. The answer is to get the correct firmware file for your revision from iClarified (which links directly to Apple's servers.)

Since you're on a 3G, you're in a pretty good place -- you can't really do anything to this phone that will make it unrestorable. Without an SHSH on file, you will be unable to restore to any iOS 4.xx revision except for the currently signed 4.2.1 (however you can always restore to pre-4.0), but with the latest redsn0w (0.9.6b7, I believe), you can jailbreak and have an untethered jailbreak for the device.

IF YOU RELY ON AN UNLOCK, MAKE SURE WHEN YOU UPGRADE YOUR IOS THAT YOU DO SO USING A CUSTOM FIRMWARE CREATED BY PWNAGETOOL SO THAT YOU DO NOT UPDATE YOUR BASEBAND AS THE CURRENT 3G BASEBAND CAN NOT BE UNLOCKED!

I don't suppose you can point me to a download of the new version of redsn0w, can you? Google just takes me to a bunch of articles talking about it. None of the links to the slightly older versions in the iClarified tutorials seem to work.

Looks like they pulled any public release of it, however, 0.9.7 betas are in the iphone-dev's google repository.

I can't state this any more clearly than I'm about to: Use the following at your own risk -- these aren't public releases, they're not for widespread consumption, they shouldn't be used by people who don't specifically need the solutions provided, and they absolutely should not be used by people who rely on their phone on a daily basis -- beyond that, there's always danger in using beta software (even if it is dev-team's software). You could wind up bricking your device, breaking your device, setting your house on fire, etc.

With that said, you can find the most recent beta releases of the current untethered jailbreak here for Mac on Muscle Nerd's repository here:

    https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/

There are no betas for Windows -- use a hackintosh or VM if you do not have access to a Mac -- this can only be completed on a Mac at present.

Other Mods: Haven't seen any sort of guideline for the publishing of beta dev-team releases yet -- if this violates any rules or is something we shouldn't do, please feel free to edit the post and let me know via PM.

Hmm... I think I might just try to jailbreak/unlock it at 4.1, for now.

    Thanks for the help.

Redsn0w 0.9.6 beta 6 is the latest version you should use. It is available for windows via the link that n1ckn4m3 gave you. It will jailbreak 4.1 or 4.2.1 on your 3G.

Okay, I completed the jailbreak and unlock and the phone is now on 4.2.1 baseband 5.15.04.

Everything seems to work great on WiFi. The problem I'm having now is that when I try to put an AT&T sim card in it, it just says "searching" in the top left corner, forever. Is there some trick to make it accept the card, that I'm missing?

Most commonly after switching SIMs you can get everything working by forcing a radio reset -- easiest way to do this is hard power-off the phone (hold home + power until it powers off), then turn it back on. Keep the AT&T SIM in for the shutdown and the boot. This also happens sometimes if you're using things like MyWi or other applications that modify the commcenter -- sometimes you have to hard reboot to get comm services back up.

Hmm... The first time I did this is came up and said, "No Service". The second time it came up and said "Searching..." again. The third time it was back to "No Service".

I still can't get it to recognize the card. Does anybody have any more ideas for me?
