    Default iPhone activation server

    Hey all
Can anyone confirm if Apple have stopped people from upgrading to the ios4 GM? I have been trying now for over 8 hours. I keep getting the message "The iPhone cannot be restored at this time because the iPhone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable"

I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on a MBP, i have the correct IPSW and iTunes 9.2 Beta!
Can someone enlighten me on whats happening or confirm whether the server is down for ios4 cos i'm going CRAZY

    Thanks all

No idea why a 3G needs TSS (the 3G iPhone does not check or expect a SHSH bundle)

Other than that, it could be that Apple is trying to stem the tide of "non dev" upgrades until the release date.

Or it could be that this GM (release candidate) has a serious bug and there will be another release candidate. I strongly doubt this at this stage.

Looks like it's validating again today. Perhaps there was a real server error yesterday (for most of the day? I guess)

Apple did have a preorder server meltdown. Maybe their other servers got overlooked for a day.

I've indeed noticed that they are actually contacting the server to check if the firmware is still "allowed". this does not mean sending back a SHSH, but rather a YES/NO confirmation that will stop iTunes from loading the firmware.

Combine that with iTunes<->server authentication and even a "man in the middle approach" will be hard to bypass.

What will be Apple's approach to loading old firmware on 2G and 3G phones? I have no idea.

I guess that's where p0sixninja's idevicerestore and ideviceactivate will start to be very useful. Right now this checking is with iTunes. (except SHSH) so by bypassing iTunes in the restore process much more is possible.
