Default iphone 4 update fail due to disconnection, w/out backup, all data lost???

this morning my dad says "download and install 5.1 firmware" to his 4.0.1 jailbroken iphone. In the middle of the update
process he panics and disconnects the phone from his computer (at least that's what he told me). now:

    - phone has "connect to itunes" sign

    - when I connect it I get
"itunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. you must restore this iphone before it can be used with itunes"

    and it shows:

    capacity n/a
    software version n/a
    serial number n/a

    - I'm on
    windows 7
    itunes 10.5.3.3

    - and here are some logs from iPhoneUpdater:
    error log - Pastebin.com

    - When I try recovery fix in "redsn0w 0.9.10b6"
I get verbose boot but at the end it says and it's stuck:

    Code:
    mounting rootfs as read-write...
    mounting devfs...
    mounting disk0s2s1...
    ERROR!
AppleBCMWLANCore ::handleOkitBusywatchdogtimeout(): error, no succesful firmware download after 60000 ms!! giving up
There are some really important "dad stuff" in the phone so a full restore really won't help,
and since there are no backups on the computer, what do you suggest that I do??

I really don't care if the phone won't be jailbroken, I just need the data!!!!!

Well, upgrading from 4.x to 5.x should have forced you to complete a backup, as the upgrade completely wipes your phone and rebuilds it, then re-syncs your content after the fact. If he cancelled the backup (or told it not to), then he's probably out of luck. redsn0w won't help, you have wiped the version of iOS that resides on the phone.

Your *only* choice would be to read this, and follow the instructions to see if you can SSH the information off the phone, but this really isn't for the faint of heart -- these are seriously in-depth instructions and doing anything wrong could delete the data you're trying to recover (in the ever-slim chance that it's not already deleted):

Emergency SSH access using a pwn'd DFU mode RamDisk
