Default iPhone 4 unlocked model MC603B UK version no signal. Baseband 3.10.01

Hi guys, need some opinions from the iPhone 4 experts out there.

I got an iPhone 4 that was originally sold in the UK by OrangeUK. I have checked the model number on various websites and this is indeed an unlocked phone [Model number MC603B http://www.iphone-network.net/how-to...4-is-unlocked/

I recently upgraded the phone to 4.2.1, used pwnage tool 4.2 to create custom IPSW (not adding anything else to the custom IPSW except for the Cydia app) but when I put in my new micro-sim, it detects the sim card but just one bar of signal (can't make calls, etc).

I plug the phone into iTunes and it gives me the message "The sim card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported". I googled that error and found that I have to activate this phone with the original SIM card (This is where I feel like a complete n00b because if the phone is unlocked, I should not have to worry about this kind of thing or the baseband?) and I read about how to activate using the Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM) method.

So I follow this guide here Hacktivate/ Activate iPhone 4/3GS/3G with SAM and redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and sure enough, I get it to activate. I still can't get a signal. I browsed this forum for an hour, reading various topics and I now understand that I should have used TinyUmbrella first.

    Summary, iPhone 4
    iOS version: 4.2.1
    Baseband: 3.10.01
    Problem: no signal.

I'm in the U.A.E. if that helps.

From reading the forums, I also understand that I can downgrade my baseband if I revert back to 4.1 (but that wouldn't help as there is no "unlock" for that baseband too) but what really puzzles me is that why do I have to worry about the baseband if this is an unlocked iPhone4 and what is my next course of action?

    Thank you.

Have you ever tried restoring it with the factory 4.2.1 firmware with your SIM inserted?

Verifying model numbers will NOT guarantee that you have an officially unlocked iPhone. It can give a hint but never be 100% accurate.
In your case, (based on your error message in iTunes) it is clear that you don't have an "officially unlocked" phone. So I think you were scammed/lied to.

The link you refer to mentions models that are carrier locked (not unlocked).

Apple can register any iPhone to be officially unlocked. They can also remove phones from the "officially locked" list if they have a good reason.

You can NEVER downgrade your baseband lower than 3.10.01

You now need to wait for ultrasn0w to be updated to unlock your baseband version.
