My 3GS had several issues and after several calls and bitching sessions they sent me a new one over the US border into Canada. the replacement refurbished 3GS arrives and I realize the digitizer isn't working so after more calls and bitching they upgrade me to the iPhone 4

Rather than it being a refurbished product they provided me with a brand new device shipped from China. New sealed and ready to go.

After waiting for 10 days for the Apple clearance and it's holdup in customs (I WAS DYING) it arrives. I play with the phone a bit and realize my sim won't fit it so I'm stuck until Monday..

Head into the Fido store and pick up a micro sim...Freeeeeee my friend works there. Get home to realize I forgot to put the iPhone 4 sim tray back and somehow managed to lose it. I WAS PISSED

I order an OEM replacement off eBay for 11$ shipped from a place in Toronto. So my problem solved, so I think!

A buddy brings me his iPhone 4 and let's me use his tray to activate. Apple TOLD ME the phone would be a Canada phone even though my phone was originally a hacked 3GS out of NYC given to me as a gift from a friend. They said having it shipped was strictly against policy due to carrier contracts, but I own pretty much every major apple product so I guess they just couldn't say no: Was it my pretty face... Hell no I'm fugly!

I use a cut down AT&T which I cut by simply aligning my Fido sim with the other and do a HACK of my own.. So I am officially a hacker! Took me less than a minute and a few tiny cuts here and there and voila... FITS LIKE A GLOVE...

My friend tells me he can jailbreak/unlock it. I'm not even sure if the what the firmware or version was at the time as I am not a tech guy and didn't care.

He downloaded the following:
1) PwnageTool_4.1.1.dmg
2) iPhone3,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw
3) iPhone3,1_4,1_8B117_Custom_Restore.ipsw

I'm not sure what he did or if he messed it up is going to admit it to me but at this time the phone is activated and displays:
1) Modem Firmware 02.10.04
2) Version 4.1 (8B117)

I don't know what you need, but I'll explain the rest to the best of my ability.
He succeeded in jailbreaking the device because cydia was installed. When he tried to do something with the downloaded firmwares and was messing with some DFU mode it would go show an the apple logo and a line below it. It would start to fill in and got stuck. Error 1600 while trying to Restore to Custom Firmware..

He took it home after that as we had been on it for 1 hour. After a couple tries at his house he gave up... Again I am pissed. Everyone says they are pros, everyone ALWAYS says something is easy. Then they mess with you iPhone and everything goes sideways.

When he gave my phone back he said it was EXACTLY as it was when it came out of the box, but still activated.

Could someone please take the time to walk me through this. I'm a newbie and will try on my own, but TSS, SHSH,hash, non-tethered and tethered. Pretend I'm just learning to walk..

My other sim card was de-activated and I've only a micro sim that obviously can't be reinserted into my 3GS, which has to be shipped back to apple or they will charge my card.

Currently for your version as of 10/24/2010, you can only jailbreak but not unlock. I rely on this website for latest information too, hxxp://www.iclarified.com/ (replace xx with tt).

Garylin so am I correct in thinking there will FOR SURE be an unlock for my set up within a few months. So much hearsay and conflicting stuff on the net I'm getting tired reading it.

No guarantee on an unlock for your baseband. You are no more privileged than all the others in a similar situation. The hackers don't owe you an unlock.

ehm... I bought an iPhone in China and have the same model no. MC605C.

I do not have a lock for sim or net.

I can put in any sim, to call....

I have heard, that china has not allowed any lock in phones.....

Try to get an micro sim adapter to check if you sim is still working.
Btw. PwnageTool 4.1.2 is released.

You could be right (about iPhones sold in china). I just checked Locating iPhone wireless carriers and it indicates that chinese iPhones are not sim locked. However the carrier lock status depends on the country and carrier that sells the iPhone. The original poster was located in Canada - not China and did not mention their model number
