Default iPhone 4 model help - I got the worst deal on eBay

    Hello guys,

I need some help here. My friend is picking some phones for me but I think that there is something wrong here. The guy sold it as unlocked, but I believe they are not.
    Here are the details:

    4.1 (8B117)
    Model MC608LL
    Firmware 02.10.04

From what I have read on the internet, this model is related to AT&T, só they are locked. My friend turned the phone on and it went directly to the homescreen. Doesn't it need to be activated?

So, is there any possibility that the phone is unlocked?

    Thank you
    Paulo

Why doesn't your friend try another sim card, then you'll know if it's unlocked or not

I asked him to do that.

But if this phone is unlocked, how is it unlocked? Am I going to be able to make future updates on its software???

Based on the model number, it's not a factory unlock. It's likely that it was jailbroken and unlocked using ultrasn0w. As such, you would need to be careful when completing any software updates to ensure you kept an unlockable baseband.

The fact that it has an older modem firmware/baseband on it is indicative that it was upgraded to 4.1 while keeping the baseband intact, most likely to ensure the unlock was still functional.

This is an iPhone 4 and the baseband 02.10.04 is the version that ships with 4.1 so it cannot be unlocked with ultrasn0w.

As n1ckn4m3 said, MC608LL is a model number associated with AT&T who generally refuse to allow their iPhones to be officially unlocked. I have heard of exceptions, but they are usually after the iPhone has been purchased and only in exceptional circumstances.

So I think you are being sold a lemon or the seller has no clue and is quoting incorrect details to you.

Oops. I confused basebands. Sorry about that -- Olethros is correct, the phone is NOT factory unlocked and the baseband on the phone is not presently unlockable via ultrasn0w.

Looks like the seller improperly described the item during sale, unfortunately..

As is listed all over this thread and many others... 02.10.04 Firmware AKA BaseBand is LOCKED at this time... Hopefully next week approx the 24th or so. The New Ultrasn0w unlock will be avail. And this is just to hoping.

    This information is slightly incorrect.

The new ultrasn0w due after 4.2 is released will NOT unlock iPhone 4 baseband 2.10.04 and higher - it will only unlock iPhone 3GS/3G basebands (5.14.02 and maybe the baseband included in iOS 4.2).

This has been clearly communicated by the iPhone dev team.

They have some "useful leads" to explore for unlocking 2.10.04 baseband - but no confirmed unlock and will not start looking for an unlock for the iPhone 4 baseband until after the next ultrasn0w is released.

currently we have ultrasn0w 1.1-1, and it for the following BB:

    - 3G/3Gs: 04.26.08 (ios 3.0/3.0.1), 05.11.07 (ios 3.1/3.1.2) , 05.12.01 (ios 3.1.3) and 05.13.03 (ios 4.0 - 4.0.2)

    - ip4: 05.19.01 (ios 4.0 - 4.0.2)

The following baseband from the following firmware currently doesn't have unlock are:

    - 3G/3Gs: 05.14.02 (ios 4.1) and 05.15.04 (ios 4.2.1)
    - ip4: 02.10.04 (ios 4.1) and 03.10.01 (ios 4.2.1)

As you can see, there are quite a few BBs to be worked on, and the BB processor is different too. I think for 3g/3gs platform, up coming unlock is working behind closed doors. However for the ip4 platform, there are some minor issues. With that said, i'm optimistic ...
