Default iPhone 4 GSM iOS 4.2.1 (3.10.01-ICE_2_8) GreenPoison JB - What Should I Do?

Hey gang. After 4 hours of reading FAQs and several other posts, I still haven't a clue what I should do with my iPhone 4. I recently purchased the phone online and had no clue how hard it would be to unlock&jailbreak it. It comes down to this:

    1) My PC's OS Windows 7 (32-bit)
    2) The iPhone 4 has iOS 4.2.1 and Modem Firmware 3.10.01-ICE_2_8
    3) Iphone 4 is locked to ATT
    4) When Iphone 4 is powered on and off, GreenPoison skull logo shows
    5) Cydia, Loader, etc not present on springboard or via iPhone search.
    6) Ran TinyUmbrella and no SHSH files other than 4.3.5 and iOS 5 betas showed up (no idea why this is considering my iOS is 4.2.1)

I'm afraid to restore and update to 4.3.5 in iTunes because there is no jailbreak available for it. Also, I prefer not to unlock with the Gevey Ultra on iOS 4.3.5 because it will cause me to do the manual method every time the phone is powered on. Any suggestions from the experts? Thanks much.

Use iFaith http://ih8sn0w.com/index.php/products/view/ifaith.snow to save your 4.2.1 SHSH blob NOW
Don't wait or try anything else first.

That it shows a custom boot logo when started suggests it has been jailbroken. Cydia missing just suggests that someone either tried to "clean out traces of jailbreak" or maybe they tried to jailbreak but something went wrong and they never got Cydia installed.

There are lots of explanations but it isn't important to find out why.

Your baseband can only be unlocked via am official "carrier authorized" unlock or via Gevey sim (which is probably illegal to use in your country)

As you have purchased the phone second hand/used you will struggle to convince the carrier to authorize an unlock without getting the original owner involved.

If you manage to save a partial SHSH blob with iFaith then you can use this to restore a clean 4.2.1 and then jailbreak / hacktivate.

Thank you for the prompt reply Olethros! After reading countless threads on here, it's very obvious you are the iPhone guru with your vast knowledge. I did a few things last night that will be of use for your analysis:

    1) I downloaded and ran iFaith last night but was a little unsure about what to do. I clicked on the "dump SHSH blobs" option and it went thru DFU etc. The process got stuck on "Batt Low 1" sequence so I just disconnected the dock connector cable and restarted my iPhone 4. Thankfully nothing changed on my phone (same iOS and same modem firmware) and it still powers on and off.

    2) I downloaded a restore ipsw file for iOS 4.2.1 and tried to do a clean restore via iTunes doing the "Shift+click Restore" method but it gave error 3149. I assume this is because Apple doesn't "sign" this version anymore. Thankfully the iPhone 4 still powers on and off with ease.

Basically, from what you have written above, it would be "ideal" if I can restore my iOS to a clean (non-jailbroken) iOS 4.2.1 and then perform an untethered jailbreak so when I use the Gevey Ultra i won't have to manually unlock the iPhone 4 every time I turn power on. Please advise how to restore the 4.2.1 (if possible) and what untethered jailbreak is best for Gevey Ultra unlock. From my extensive research, Redsn0w jailbreak is TETHERED where Greenpois0n is UNTETHERED. Some experts believe Redsn0w jailbreak is better but what's important to me is the jailbreak to be untethered (eliminating need to manually unlock the iPhone 4 startup). In the end, I just need Cydia so I can run the Furious Mod. Thanks again for all of your assistance as it's greatly appreciated. Also, I hope to visit your great country one day next time I visit Europe on vacation

First verify that Dump SHSH blobs worked properly and you have a copy of the 4.2.1 blob saved both on the server and locally. You can do this with iFaith.

Then if you are sure that you have a 4.2.1 blob you need to use iFaith to make a properly signed IPSW and then put the phone into pwned DFU mode (via redsn0w or iReb) and restore the properly signed 4.2.1 IPSW with iTunes.

Redsn0w's jailbreak is solid. Initially redsn0w didn't have the ability to jailbreak 4.2.1 untethered and I'm actually unsure if the later 0.9.6rc versions include the untether exploit (I guess I should test this out one day)

There is nothing wrong with combining the two (for example jailbreaking tethered with redsn0w 0.9.6 and then untether with greensn0w). They don't step on each others toes.

As I have said before using GeveySIM is considered illegal to use in your country (no matter which geveysim version [or clone] you use, it can block others who are trying to ring an emergency number). It's considered even more risky in Europe where the 112 number is actually the standardized emergency number (rather than an alternate emergency number to 911 as it is in the US)

I tried iFaith again and the program can't get past the capturing of the "Batt Low 1" blob. It stays stuck on this sequence forever. Wish it could have saved the blob successfully

At this point, I have to concede that restoring to a clean 4.2.1 is not possible. Without a copy of 4.2.1 blob, I can't restore whatsoever. All I can think of doing next is to re-install Greenpoison jailbreak and see if Cydia loads. I might even consider doing additional Redsn0w jailbreak if Gevey Ultra doesn't work well with Greenpoison jailbreak.

A friend told me to update to iOS 4.3.5 and manually unlock my iPhone 4 at startup until a iOS 4.3.5 untethered jailbreak is developed. But I have read posts that iOS 4.3.5 WON'T be jailbroken because iOS 5 is about to be released. What's your take on this? Thanks again!

iOS 4.3.5 is a tethered jailbreak right now, and the odds are slim that there will be a tethered jailbreak for it because (as you mentioned), the new hardware will be launched with iOS 5 -- so any non-published untether exploit should be kept quiet in the hopes that it will not be fixed for iOS 5 or the new hardware.

You're correct that without the 4.2.1 blob, you can't restore. That said, I'd spend more time with iFaith trying to see why it's failing on the blob capture -- it's your only chance to have a stable and untethered jailbreak at the moment, so it's probably worth the effort to troubleshoot.
The preceding forum post has been brought to you by the letter "N" and the number 42.

That is frustrating, are you sure you have the latest version of iFaith (1.3.1) and are performing the procedure correctly - starting in regular DFU mode, not pwned DFU

    @n1ckn4m3

I ran iFaith 3 more times with the same outcome. I think the previous owner tried to remove the greenpoison jailbreak and in the process screwed with the iOS 4.2.1 blobs. Either way, I think the update to iOS 4.3.5 is inevitable unfortunately. Only other choice is to jailbreak the EXISTING 4.2.1 and hope the phone runs smoothly. I know it doesn't sound like a good option.

    @Olethros

Yes, I am running the iFaith (v1.3.1) procedure correctly because I don't know how to start in Pwned DFU mode. I just follow the instructons on the screen when executing the "Dump SHSH blobs" option. Like I said to n1ckn4m3, I can tell something isn't right with my iOS. Although the apps open and run smoothly, the fact that Cydia is nowhere to be found means the Greenpoison jailbreak has been modified or attempted to be deleted. Obviously, I would prefer a fresh iOS 4.2.1 so I can perform my own jailbreaks but I don't believe it will be possible.

My only question is this gentlemen: If I attempt to do BOTH Greenpoison and Redsn0w jailbreaks, and the phone freezes/locks up for some reason, will I be able to restore and update to iOS 4.3.5 and call it a day??? Thanks again!

You may be able to reinstate Cydia by simply running redsn0w (0.9.6rc4 through to 0.9.6rc19) - supplying redsn0w with a 4.2.1 IPSW and selecting ONLY install Cydia.

Yes - unless Apple decides to release 4.3.6 or 5.0 before you attempt this.

    Gentlemen,

I installed BOTH Greenpoison (6.1) and Redsn0w (0.9.8b4) respectively. After installing Greenpoison (or should I say re-installing because the skull logo was already on my phone), there was no noticeable difference with the iOS and the "loader" and "cydia" apps weren't on the springboard. Also, I noticed that when the Greenpoison jailbreaking was happening, there were some lines saying "bootdisk/ram disk can't be mounted" of that sort.

After installing Redsn0w, "cydia" and "loader" showed up on the springboard. I haven't had a chance to play with those apps because I need to do it with a WiFi connection. But, although I understand the meanings of tethered and untethered jailbreaks, I am confused how it applies to my situation. My phone powers on with no issues. Is it because I have both a tethered and untethered jailbreak on my phone at the same time? Or do I need to boot tethered (using Redsn0w) in order to access the apps on cydia??? Please explain. Thanks!!!
