Default Iphone 3GS will not boot fully

    Hi,
My uncle recently broke an Iphone 3gs and decided to give it to me
He said he cant remember what firmware it was on before and he cant remember what firmware it he was updating to, but first time he tried he got the apple logo, then he tried again and all that comes up is restore error 21 and the iphone trys to boot(white screen)

If i turn it off with the power button itunes detects it in dfu mode
but when its on white screen itunes its detected as recovery mode

ive tried Ireb, tiny umbrella, irecovery, 3 different computers to update but i get different errors (1600,1601) but mainly 21

ive opened the phone to drain the battery but it just went straight back into dfu mode
the camera ribbon was slightly torn, could this be the cause? (the phones been opened before to change the back cover)

    restore error 21 pastie

Connect the phone to the computer, click Restore, let iTunes download and install the latest version.

Okay, have you tried connecting the phone to PwnageTool, select DFU, follow instructions and then restore? If you get a different result, please post the restore log.

I don't own a mac, or know anybody who does
but do you think it will give me a different error code?

Well you could use redsn0w, the only problem is that you have to select the current firmware ipsw, but you don't know what firmware is installed, right? Anyway, try a few times, each with a different ipsw of versions you think could be installed. Just launch redsn0w, select firmware, select enter pwned dfu, follow instructions and restore to a *custom* firmware (use sn0wbreeze to create one).

Ok.. first thing, are you sure you have a saved SHSH for 4.2.1 for this device??

    My suggestion:

make a custom 4.3.3 IPSW with either pwnagetool 4.3.1 or sn0wbreeze (latest), make sure to disable baseband update in the custom IPSW.
Follow the instructions in this post #1873518 - Pastie

Then put the 3GS into pwned dfu mode (pwnagetool has a button for this) and option-click restore in iTunes, select the custom 4.3.3 IPSW and restore that.

I definately shouldn't have any saved shsh files, because my uncle wouldnt know how to do any of this

i havent got a mac, so should i use somthing esle like redsn0w to put it in pwned dfu mode, if so... which firmware should i try,

should i try custom firmwares for 4.3.1, 4.3.2, and 4.3.2?

No, in redsn0w you try original firmwares, try the one you think is probably installed, if it doesn't work try another one, but always original. When you finally enter pwned DFU, restore to a custom 4.3.3, use sn0wbreeze to create one.

    1. Using this procedure, clear any entries that might be causing problems in your hosts file #1873518 - Pastie
    2. Use redsn0w 0.9.6rc16 and a 4.3.3 IPSW for your model iPhone to enter "pwned DFU mode". Make sure iTunes is not running when you do this. If you fail to enter pwned DFU mode, restard your computer and try again. You need a 10.2.x version of iTunes installed.
    3. Make a custom 4.3.3 IPSW with the latest version of sn0wbreeze - be sure to disable baseband update (this is an option in sn0wbreeze)
    4. Shift-click restore in iTunes and browse to the custom IPSW.

If this doesn't work, publish the failed restore log.

Don't try "different original IPSWs from different iOS versions" with redsn0w, just stick to the 4.3.3 IPSW
