Default iPhone 3gs 4.3.5 need help to understand what I need to do

I will be going to Panama later this year for 3 months. I have been told it is possible to unlock or jailbreak (don't know which is correct) the iPhone (AT&T) so that I could use a SIM card from a local Panama cell service provider in my iPhone and use it in Panama.

I have been reading about jailbreaking, unlocking, etc but can't really make heads or tails and can't figure out where to start.

All I want to do is to be able to use this iPhone in Panama but don't know where to start to who to believe. Don't need to do anything else other than maybe be able to tether the iphone to a PC for internet access.

What do I need to do?

Any help for this newbie is greatly appreciated.

    thanks, Pat

First step, save your SHSH blobs with TinyUmbrella.

With iOS 4.3.5 - you are limited to a tethered jailbreak. It might be possible to downgrade to iOS 4.1 (but nothing in between) and from there you can jailbreak untethered.

Don't confuse tethered jailbreak with tethering the phone to a PC for sharing Internet access (they are completely unrelated)

Unlock.. Your only option is the iPad baseband + ultrasn0w. I suggest you read up about the side effects and implications of the iPad baseband before you try anything further.

Hi Olethros, thanks for your reply.

Any new developments on my situation for my iphone? What I want to do is be able to use this phone in panama with a different provider's SIM.

    AT&T iPhone 3GS

    Model MC135LL

    Version 4.3.5 (8L1)

    Modem Firmware 05.16.02

Will IOS 5.x be any different?

I've looked around this site but don't understand most of the terms or what I am reading.

I did run tinyumbrella, but don't really know what it was for or what it achieved.

Any advice is basic terms is appreciated.

    thanks, Pat pat@criterium-farrell.com

Unfortunately, the answer is still the same -- the baseband included on these versions of iOS are not soft-unlockable. Your only choice to get an unlocked phone is to utilize the iPad baseband solution, and that is both permanent and problematic. Recent developments have mitigated a large percentage of the GPS issues that people had when using the 06.15 baseband, however, it still causes permanent changes to your device that cannot be un-done and that will impact your ability to restore in the future.

If it is a strict requirement that you have an unlocked phone (e.g., the phone is of absolutely no use to you without the unlock), then you can investigate the dev-team's solution to upgrading your baseband to the iPad baseband, and then upgrading to iOS5. You will then have a software unlock, but I can't be more clear than saying that doing this will make it IMPOSSIBLE to complete a standard restore on your phone of a stock .IPSW, it makes restoring in general VERY DIFFICULT and time consuming, and there is absolutely NO WAY to undo this once it has been completed. Last but not least, this change is VERY apparent to Apple, so bringing the phone into a Genius Bar will immediately result in your warranty (if any exists) being voided.

So, there is one option to unlock your 3GS, but it's not a great one and we really recommend you wait if you can, as it will have a large impact on the procedure required for you to restore EVER again in the future. There is the strong likelihood that an updated unlock will be released sometime in the November/December timeframe to correspond with the wide availability of the iPhone 4S hardware and the new baseband in iOS5. If you can wait that long, I can almost guarantee that what they release will be far more reliable and less impacting than what is currently available.

Unfortunately no. AT&T will not authorize an unlock of the phone under any circumstance -- there is truly nothing you can do from the carrier side at this point. Apple cannot assist in unlocking because locking is something imposed by the carriers and not by Apple -- Apple is contractually obligated not to circumvent carrier protection on these devices.

Just had an idea that may work for me.

I have an older AT&T 3G iPhone that I replace about a year or more ago due to an apparent battery failure. The phone works fine as long as it is plugged in to the charger but goes dead soon after it is unplugged.

The info on this phone is:

    3.1.3 (7E18)
    MB704LL
    05.12.01

Can this older iphone that has not been use or updated in a very long time be unlocked so that I can use a SIM from a mobile provider in Panama?

If so, please help me understand what to do. All I want is to be able to use the iphone with a different providers SIM.

Even though I have read a lot on this site, all the unfamiliar acronyms and software names are confusing and I really would not know where to start and what to do.

Thanks for any advice and direction

Yes, the 3G iPhone running 3.1.3 can be jailbroken and soft unlocked using ultrasn0w. I believe you can upgrade to 4.2.1, block the baseband update (using tiny umbrella), and then use redsn0w and ultrasn0w to get your jailbreak and unlock.

No problem, friendly reminder that you'll need an SHSH on file for any version of 4.x you're attempting to restore -- make sure it's either on file with Cydia or that you have a copy of the .SHSH on your local machine in a location that Tiny Umbrella can find it, and then you should be good to go.
