The solutions all require DFU mode. The only legitimate reason you can't enter dfu mode is if the home or power/sleep button is physically broken.

Solution: jailbreak with greenpois0n RC6.1, then run redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 and select ONLY "install Cydia"

hi. thanks for answering. but it doesn't help me. I know that all solutions require DFU mode. I can't seem to get the phone into dfu mode. i tried all the various key presses but its still not taking me there. i can't do anything with this phone now. its on stock 4.2.1 and in emergency mode as its now locked.

    OK troubleshooting 101

    • test that both sleep and home work by holding home/sleep for more than 10 seconds. Your phone will either force shutdown or restart.
    • You cannot enter DFU mode unless the phone detects power via the dockconnector port. This means it needs to be connected via an original Apple 30 pin dock connector cable to a USB port (that supplies enough power) on a computer or to an original apple charger.

If you verify both these items and still can't get into DFU mode, then your problem is timing (or insufficent power, try a different USB port, a USB hub or a different computer

Are you timing this with a watch or something. 3 seconds sounds too fast. Also are you timing from the point the screen goes black?

Power via is absolutely vital to entering DFU mode
