Question iPhone 3G no signal bars?

    Hello.

Ok so, this possibly was a dumb idea.. But I brought a iPhone 3G off ebay, restored the iPhone via iTunes, brought up the set up screen (for sync) and then synced, phone works fine. However i get no signal bars, tried with more than one sim (both on the network the phones locked to) and no signal, it does show o2-uk 3G, however there are no bars?

The sims both work in different phones, does this mean my iPhone is actually barred? Because I thought if a phone was barred, it would not connect to the network at all and just say No Service?
It also says waiting for activation, but has done for days..

    anyone able to help?
    Its running iOS 4.1.

Please post your modem firmware/baseband version.

However the behaviour you are seeing with u2 uk is consistent with IMEI blacklisting

Yes that is correct. It is currently impossible to unlock this version with ultrasn0w.

That means - for this phone to wirk on o2 it needs to either be officially unlocked or carrier locked to u2 uk. (of course also not imei blacklisted)

In the uk it is best to insist that the seller provide proof that the iPhone is not imei blacklisted. You have to pay to get this information. So it's smartest to make it the sellers problem. Asking for a verification that the phone is not IMEI blacklisted is a pretty quick way to detect if they are legit or not.

Let's hope your phone is not blacklisted. However it is useful info to keep in mind for your next purchase.

thanks loads, the info has really helped.
once the new jailbreak is out (greenpois0n?) will I be able to test it and find out?
Also if the phones unlocked but the imei is blacklisted im guessing the problem will not go away?

Guess i'll be buying a new phone! the choice is apple or android now. haha

You don't need a new jailbreak to test if it is IMEI blacklisted.

If you could get past the "slide for emergency" screen and you used an o2 sim card. Then the sim card you used was acceptable from apple's perspective.

Does the same sim work in another mobile (not another iPhone)?

If the sim works in another mobile. The "waiting for activation" suggests that the problem is at the carrier side. Contact o2, either they need to do additional steps to activate your account on the iPhone. Otherwise the only other (non hardware) cause for your symptoms is that it is IMEI blacklisted.

If the sim didn't work in another mobile then the sim is your problem.

Redsn0w beta 0.9.6 can jailbreak 4.1 on a 3G iPhone. (os x only right now). New jailbreak might not be called greenpoison. No idea when it will be released.

I mean, if it is IMEI blacklisted, if i jailbreaked and unlocked my phone (when the software comes out), would it work then? Or if a IMEI is blacklisted, does that mean the phones dead?

Also the phone with a o2 sim card, restoring it with that sim card, I can still use the phone perfectly normally, just i have no signal bars, so calls and text fail. but everything else on the phones fine.

jailbreak/unofficial unlocking won't help. The blacklisting is implemented by a central register and once blacklisted, the phone is blocked across the entire EU.

These symptoms sound very much like IMEI blacklisting, however I would confirm this by speaking directly to o2 uk.

In the UK, the individual or company that originally asked for the blacklist is the only one authorised to remove the blacklist.

    Orange & O2:
If you place an active orange or O2 SIM into a blacklisted handset you phone will not show any signal strength at all! If the handset is a Nokia then a "SIM card registration failed" message will also be displayed. If your handset is an Ericsson then an "Invalid Mobile" message will be displayed. For most other manufacturers the handset will simply show no signal!
If your phone is blacklisted, please don't ask about ways to bypass it.
We don't tolerate any discussion of illegal activities on this forum - so please respect this. There are no software tools that can bypass blacklisting for an iPhone.

Simply owning tools that can be used to bypass blacklisting on a mobile is a criminal offence in the UK.

Phones are blacklisted because the owners report them lost and claim on insurance. This is to prevent people trying to continue to use the supposedly lost phone. They are also blacklisted if the owner defaults on the contract. So you can't assume IMEI blacklisting = stolen phone. You can only assume IMEI blacklisting = suspected fraud.

Talk to o2. That is your only option.
