Default iPhone 3G FW 3.1.2 thinking of upgrading to 4.x

    Hi all,
I have everything download and already hook up my iPhone to computer for restore. About my iPhone 3G FW 3.1.2 Jailbreak Blackrain Unlock Blacksnow. I have my shsh blobs save for 4.1 and 4.2.1 other version keep saying Cydia server overload. I just can't seem to save for 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2 or it's too late when it keep saying Cydia server overload? Now, before I attempt to jailbreak and unlock my Iphone 3G to iOS 4.x. I would like to know which 4.x FW is best for my phone? Only can use Windows as I don't have a Mac.

    1. I was thinking of iOS 4.0.1 or 4.0.2? (Does Jailbreakme still work?)
    2. iOS 4.1 (Don't want to try Ipad 6:15 BB)
    2. Another choice might be attempting Snowbreeze method and jailbreak/unlock to 4.2.1? While keeping my BB 5:11 so I can still unlock using custom FW 4.2.1. Is it good idea? Not sure how many success with this method. (No Mac just Windows7)

I have read a lot and not much info on Snowbreeze jailbreak. How slow will the phone be if upgrading iPhone 3G to iOS 4.x? Is it like extremely slow? I want to upgrade to 4.x because of some apps. Can anyone guide me to the right direction. Thanks for helping a newcomer.

Okay, first of all, glad to hear you are getting rid of blacksn0w, you have been risking serious bootloop problems for a long time.

Secondly the SHSH requirement for 3G iPhone isn't as "essential" as it is for the 3GS and newer devices. The 3G only has a soft-shsh with the check only in iTunes - not on the phone itself.

Whatever you do, I recommend you use custom IPSW. That will give you a way to "revert back" if you encounter problems. Also do not put yourself into a situation where you need to use the iPad baseband for unlock.

This means: Only load iOS 4.1 or 4.2.1 via properly made custom IPSW (we only support and recommend Pwnagetool for making custom IPSW)
Don't rely on redsn0w, greenpois0n, limera1n as your primary jailbreak tool. By the time you actually run these tools, your baseband has already been updated (potentially past the point where it can be unlocked)

    1. Jailbreakme is still around, I don't recommend it for you for the following reasons:
      • It requires that you can legitimately activate the phone first, phonebook SIMs were blocked by Apple long ago
      • You have a pwned for life device so don't need a userland only jailbreak
      • You will experience problems restoring iOS 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2 as you don't have a SHSH for these iOS versions. This can be bypassed (most easily via custom IPSW)
    2. iOS 4.1 via custom IPSW is definitely an option - I recommend you use SAM or pushdoctor to obtain legitimate activation (same advice for iOS 4.2.1)
    3. Hackint0sh has had a long standing policy of not recommending or providing support for sn0wbreeze. There are many posts explaining why. In summary - Pwnagetool is more reliable. My suggestions: virtualize OS X and make a custom IPSW with pwnagetool. Use sn0wbreeze at your own risk.

-I actually haven't encounter any boot loop problem ever since I jailbroke with blackrain and unlock with blacksn0w. Is it suppose to have those problems? I have my phone for over 2-3 years so far.

-I don't have a mac. I can try google dl it. If I don't rely on redsn0w to jailbreak for iOS 4.1 or 4.2.1 then what would I use to restore? Please point me in the right direction. Would it be better if I google for custom ipsw or attempt sn0wbreeze for it? Google for custom ipsw is hard to trust. Wish I had a mac then I won't be stuck with those risky options

-if I did go to 4.2.1 then I was thinking to use SAM also. From your experience which iOS 4.x should I restore to:
    4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, (to stay unlockable)
4.1, 4.2.1 (if custom ipsw fail)
iPad BB if fail to preserve BB for unlock. Thanks for your great help so far. I really appreciate it.

I strongly recommend you use custom IPSW. Either Pwnagetool 4.0.1 (iOS 4.0) or Pwnagetool 4.1.2 (iOS 4.1) or Pwnagetool 4.2 (iOS 4.2.1) - if you choose to use sn0wbreeze to create custom IPSW you do that at your own risk.

SAM works with iOS 3.1.3 and higher (there are some carriers/sim cards that aren't yet fully supported by SAM)

I don't recommend you restore any original iOS IPSW - stick with custom IPSW.
