iOS 4.1 GM (Goldmaster) on ADC - Do not update!
Apple made 4.1 as Goldmaster available to developers. Due to the lack of Jailbreak and unlock for this version of iOS, we warn you not to update, unless you know what you are doing!
Also updating to iOS 4.1 GM requires a device regsitered with an paid Apple Developer Account. If your device is not registered.
DO NOT UPDATE OR ATTEMP TO!

I havent been into the iphone fot that long but I have 2 3GS's. A 32gb and a 16gb. Ive updated the 32gb to 4.1 already, not realising that I might be screwed for unlocking it when a JB comes out. Do you think there will be a jailbreak or am I screwed?

Do you have a SHSH backup? Did you click "make my life easier" in Cydia?
If so and you have SHSH for 4.0.1 or older you can downgrade OS and jailbreak.
No way to downgrade baseband so if you rely on utrasn0w you have a long wait.

iPhone 3GS 32GB (4.3.3; Pwnagetool) factory unlocked oldest SHSH 3.1
iPhone 8GB (3.1.3; Pwnagetool) AT&T Locked - Unlocked with bootneuter

Depends on what model iPhone
The iPhone 4 can be updated (if you use TinyUmbrella during the update) without updating the baseband
The iPhone 3GS (old baseband) and the iPhone 3G can use pwnagetool custom IPSW. This gives the option to disable the baseband update.
So.. the only people out of luck are new bootrom 3GS owners and iPhone 4 owners who updated without using TinyUmbrella during the update process.
There was a short period when if you updated on an iPhone 4, you could downgrade to 4.0.2 and also downgrade the baseband (the baseband update/downgrade on iPhone 4 requires a SHSH blob also) but Apple has now stopped signing 4.0.2 so no more legit downgrades of OS and baseband for iPhone 4 owners.

How long do you think it will be before or even if, we will see an unlocking app for the new baseband (for all those people who updated to 4.01 without backing up shsh) Thanks again mate

Possibly never... there are no guarantees when it comes to unlock or jailbreak of newer iOS versions.

Not really a fair question to ask. Olethros (while being one of the most knowledgeable people I've ever encountered in relation to the iPhone, jailbreaking, iOS, etc.) is not a member of the dev-team. While some of us are in direct contact with members of the dev-team, it's rare that they would provide us any information that they wouldn't provide publicly unless we were working with them directly on a jailbreak or unlock exploit. As such, the best anyone can really say is what Olethros and I always say:
Historically, the dev-team releases unlocks and jailbreaks after each ROUND of new hardware releases. This means that we can expect that there is a high likelihood of a jailbreak and unlock being released a few weeks after the next iteration of hardware (iPhone 5) is released. As always, this is a cat and mouse game. The dev-team has no reason to release a jailbreak just for iOS 4.3 or for the iPad 2 if they have the opportunity of waiting until the next hardware is released and then catching it with the same exploit. They're smart enough to hold back on releasing to ensure that the highest number of devices will be able to be targeted with their releases -- they also don't hold off for no reason if not necessary. If they find that an exploit they're planning to use is fixed in an upcoming iOS release, they'll release early as opposed to holding off.
Ultimately, there are definitely things in the works already for untethered 4.3 jailbreaks, ipad 2 jailbreaks, and there have been some very positive advancements that the team has been making towards achieving the "holy grail" of unlocks with the NCK 40-bit unlock code, so it's an exciting time for people with these devices -- but AS ALWAYS, there are no guarantees that any will be released, no guarantees that the unlocks will be found, etc.
So, no one is really ever sure except for the people working on it, and things change so fast that things we're sure of today may be completely outdated and wrong tomorrow.
My advice? Have patience. Don't do anything stupid, get your SHSH on file, and you'll be ready when the next round of jailbreaks and unlocks are released.
The preceding forum post has been brought to you by the letter "N" and the number 42.
