Arrow iOS 3.1.2 to 4.0.1 - Internet connection needed?

Hi there! This is my first post!

My question is the following: I want to update to 4.0.1, and I've downloaded a non-hacked .ipsw file because my iTunes PC is not connected to Internet, but when I try to Shift-Restore I get a message saying Apple will verify this.
Does this mean I must be connected to do the Shift-restore?

    Thank you!

Yes you need Internet connection for iTunes update, apple has to digitally sign the authorisation ( it checks to make sure you are updating to the newest version available ) , as they don't want you restoring to older versions.

My wife just bought a 3GS which is on 3.1.3 which I tried to restore up to 4.0.1 and found this out by searching the error code 3194.

But it seems everyone is trying to get off 4 and back onto a 3 firmware I have the new phone and don't really see the problem yet.

At this point, if you do not have an SHSH on file for 4.0.1, you will be prompted that "The device is not eligible for the requested build." and you will be unable to upgrade. The only version Apple is signing right now is 4.0.2.

If you do have the SHSH, point your hosts file at saurik's server and try again - that should take care of it.
The preceding forum post has been brought to you by the letter "N" and the number 42.

    iPhone 4, 32GB (iOS 6.1.2 | evasi0n | SHSH: 4.0 - 6.1.2)
    iPad 2 3G, 64GB (iOS 6.1.2 | evasi0n
    |
    SHSH: 4.3 & 4.3.3 - 6.1)

As n1ckn4m3 said, without a SHSH for 4.0.1 you cannot upgrade to 4.0.1

Apple no longer signs 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 only 4.1

The only way to restore official IPSW without an internet connection is via TinyUmbrella (The Firmware Umbrella) you first need to have requested a SHSH for the iOS version (request must include your iPhone's specific ECID) on a machine with internet access, then transfer the locally cached SHSH to your offline machine.

This does not work for iPhone 4 as additional security requires that the iPhone be connected to the computer while TinyUmbrella requests the SHSH from apple.

This is a dead end.. thread closed
