Yes, you need to either use a carrier that supports built-in tethering, or hack it on (commcenter patch plus carrier bundle tweak, or use mywi or pdanet)

I did some research on the commcenter partch plus carrier bundle tweak but I couldnt find a step by step with positive feedback. All the guides Ive found have negative feedback replies.
Can you point me to the right search direction to find a good guide?
Also, what am I doing exactly? Can this harm my computer in any way?

No it can't harm your computer. Wortel's patch seems to be fine for 4.0 through to 4.2.1
I don't know any good guides for this off the top of my head. We aren't your personal google, do the research yourself.
