I'm waiting for my iPhone 3Gs to arrive, it will be bb 5.12.01 (yay!). I've had the 1st gen iPhone since it came out, time to move on

But I just .. can't understand .. how the hell do I safely update & jailbreak to the newest iOS version, keeping the 5.12.01 fw, and then unlocking?? I'm using Windows btw.

As far as I understand, I have to use redsn0w to jailbreak, and then via cydia ultrasn0w to unlock. BUT I keep reeding that "ultrasn0w unlockers keep away from redsn0w". I don't get it??

I tried reading various tutorial, some of the suggest "using a custom ipsw". How do I do that?...

Is there anyone/any tutorial, that could explain, how to update & jailbreak to the latest iOS, keep the unlockable bb without update'ing it, and then unlocking it?? I've used the 1st gen iphone since it's birth.. Not once did I have so many questions about jailbreak & unlocking ..

My normal answer to this question is "use pwnagetool" - but since you are using windows my answer is:

Try and borrow a mac and use pwnagetool.
Otherwise (and I recommend you try very hard to borrow a mac) use sn0wbreeze and be sure to chose the prevent baseband update option.

There are tutorials on iClarified.

Don't use redsn0w, you WILL lose your ability to unlock (except via the iPad baseband - which is a bad idea). The warnings are 100% correct - ultrasn0w unlockers should avoid redsn0w.
