Help! think I missed up my Iphone4
Hey guys.. I tried to jailbreak my phone for the first time today. I have a iphone 4 w/ 4.2.1 installed. I ran redsn0w which installed cydia on my phone. After install I see a cydia icon on my springbrd but when I click on cydia to run it nothing happens. Do I have to install something else to make cydia work? Where do I go from here?

What you are experiencing is normal/expected.
Currently iOS 4.2.1 is limited to a semi-tethered jailbreak for most recent devices. You need to use the "just boot tethered for now" option in redsn0w to get Cydia working.
from: Dev-Team Blog - Thanksgiving with Apple
- Tethered” does not mean you cannot boot at all without PC/Mac assistance. If you have not installed any tweaks that hook into important programs like SpringBoard or CommCenter, your device will actually boot. However, jailbreak programs like Cydia won’t work (and Cydia may still have a white icon). Also, certain built-in apps that had to be moved by Cydia will fail (Safari being the most noticeable example).
- If you’ve installed MobileSubstrate tweaks that hook into SpringBoard or other important programs, your boot will actually fail (you’ll get stuck at the Apple logo). You need to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered right now”.

Please don't give incorrect advice. I think you meant to say that it's not possible to unlock an iPhone 4 that is running the latest baseband. However this is not what the poster was asking for.

- download the correct iOS 4.2.1 IPSW from here http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm - the one you want is iPhone3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw
- get a copy of the latest redsn0w 0.9.6 beta from Dev-Team Blog - Thanksgiving with Apple
- Plug the iPhone into your computer - The iPhone should be powered on and stuck at the white apple.
- Hold down home and power/sleep buttons until the screen goes black
- As soon as the screen goes black, start counting - when you count to 5 release the power/sleep button (but keep on holding the home button)
- The screen should stay black and iTunes might open saying the phone needs to be restored. If iTunes opens, click OK to that message and quit iTunes.
- Once you get to this point, run redsn0w which was downloaded earlier.
- Then look at the following guide - but only perform the steps I mention, even if you are on windows, the steps are the same.
iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 4 Using RedSn0w (Mac) [4.2.1]
Step 4 to Step 7
And then the step labelled "IMPORTANT" after step 13

If you still have a redsn0w 0.9.6 beta 3 or higher version on your computer, you don't need to download another copy.
If you already have a file called iPhone3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw and redsn0w recognizes it as valid, then you don't need to download it again.

Check your USB connections, make sure you are not using a cheap third party USB cable.
