    Default Help jailbreaking iPhone 3G

I recently bought the iPhone 4 so I gave my old 3G to my girlfriend who hadnt realized she couldnt update the phone, and ive managed to unlock it and thought it had worked but shes telling me that its just coming up with "searching..." when she inserts her sim card.

So she has the phone and is not very tech savvy with this stuff so was wondering if anyone could point out a simple tutorial or explain it simply so that I can explain to her how to do it as im currently at University 100 miles away from her and the phone and my previous efforts hadnt worked.

I got the information from here which is so:

    version 4.2.1(8C148)
    carrier O2 9.0
    Model MB499LL
    Serial number 87829TL61R4
    IMEI 01 161300 927395 1
    ICCID 8944 1100 6509 7759 113
    Modem firmware 05.15.04

Thank you to anyone who can help?

I wouldnt mind restoring to earlier firmware if its not possible to jailbreak this one but again help with a tutorial would be fantastic.

    You have three possible options:

As you seem to be in the UK, you should contact your carrier and see if they can unlock your old 3G for you (for a small fee=
Maybe you can downgrade your baseband (very very unlikely)
You can permanently upgrade your baseband to version 06.15.00 (from the iPad 3G) - this is not a good option and I don't really recommend it (but it will work)

To test the chance of downgrading baseband either install Fuzzyband downgrader from Cydia or run TinyUmbrella on your computer and connect the phone. Check what baseband bootloader you have. If it says 5.8 - then you are lucky. If it says 5.9 or higher then you can't ever downgrade baseband

Before you try the (irreversible) 6.15 baseband update I recommend you read up on the side effects (especially the risk of losing GPS and the extra difficulties with restoring) Dev-Team Blog - Ultra-recycle

Various hackers are trying to come up with a better solution, but it could be months before another solution is available.

I have the same problem with my phone, it has firmware 4.2.1 and it's not jailbroken. Also want to downgrade to earlier version!

I doubt you have the same problem. Did you understand the actual problem described in this thread?

I agree, it was my misunderstanding.

I jailbreak-ed my phone and now it's working.
