You have a SHSH problem. Either your hosts file is not configured properly or you don't have the SHSH you actually need to restore. This is why you go to DFU mode.

What ever you are trying to do, don't even think about putting firmware 4.2.1 on your iphone4 at this time. Don't do it if you need jailbreak and unlock.

I want to jailbreak it and unlock it but I don't I have too many options here,do I? I think I have tried all options and the phone is still in dfu. If i restore it to 4.2.1, is it possible to unlock it at 4.3 iOS whenever is available?

Just wait a few days - I *might* have a solution - but I have not personally tested it yet. Do you have access to a mac?

Yes I have access, I can wait a few days, the only thing I haven't tested is to jailbreak it with custom firmware 4.1 via redsnow. I will give it a try tonight and get back to you with the results, what do you have in mind?

If the images you have flashed to NOR were at 4.1 before you started this whole mess - then *maybe* you might be able to restore with pwned DFU mode and custom 4.1 IPSW. If the device goes to DFU mode after the restore, then I doubt any redsn0w will help you.

I have an "unofficial" iPhone 4 pwnagetool bundle for 4.2.1 that is designed to "just prevent baseband update", it doesn't install Cydia or anything else. You will need to use a "tethered jailbreak/boot"

My iPhone 4 has baseband 2.10.04 and I don't need unlock (at least for now) - but I haven't had a chance to test this yet (too many questions from people who don't bother to search).

You lost me here, what do you mean ''If the images you have flashed to NOR were at 4.1 before you started this whole mess..''
I had to put the phone initially in dfu mode, because I had read that dfu would override the 1604 error, that later on proved to be a wrong move.
I will try to jailbreak it with redsnow with a custom 4.1 firmware and in case that doesn't work I will be happy to test your ''unofficial'' pwnage tool.
Thanks again for your support, I will inform how the jailbreak will go this afternoon..

Okay let me explain this in simpler terms:

There is a special section of your iPhone's storage where the key boot-up files are stored. Think of this as similar to your computer's BIOS. It's referred to as NOR.
The key boot up files include LLB, iBoot and some graphics (AppleLogo etc)
These files are written to NOR in the exact format which they are sent by iTunes. This normally means they are encrypted and signed with your unique SHSH.
When the iPhone boots up, each step in the boot process checks that the next boot file is valid - this includes decrypting and checking that the next boot file is correctly signed (SHSH). If this check fails, the boot fails.

In your case, the check of the first file in the boot process (LLB) is failing - either because it is empty, or incorrectly signed, or something else.

Your wrong move was to try to restore to an iOS version that you have no SHSH for (and generally mis-understanding or ignoring the importance of SHSH)

Understood!Probably jailbreaking with custom 4.1 will fail also, so my last chance will be the custom pwnage tool, whenever you are ready with it, tell me how we can proceed.
    Thanks again
