The unlocks will come at the same time. If there was an unlock that only worked on 2.10.04 it would have already been released when 4.2.1 came out

Then you can ONLY ever restore to 4.2.1 (this doesn't have to update your baseband though - but the technique is unofficial - for now)

This doesn't make any sense. You can't ever restore to 4.1 - tethered or not.

Ok after reading every forum google had to offer i finally figured out what was causing this problem, and its a pretty easy fix, it has nothing to do with uninstalling itunes, or Ireb not being for iphone4 it is the i had 4 phones, and all fixed easily, so if you havent solved the problem let me know and ill explain how to do it.

    Hello guys,
I have the same problem like most of you in this thread. I have a iphone 4 with 4.1, 1.59bb,with the latest itunes in windows 7. I managed to restore from 4.01 to 4.1with the use of ireb (for avoiding error 1604), tiny umbrella running the tss server and redsnow. The result is that although restore was succesful and tethered ofcourse, the phone is still in dfu mode, once i disconnected the usb cable after a while the screen went black. Like playtime44 ''Any suggestions that I should use TinyUmbrella to "Kick Device Out Of Recovery" are of no use, as the EXIT RECOVERY button is grayed out during the whole restore process'', the same with recboot. Any suggestions? Is there a way to go from tethered to untethered?

P.S I have saved the shsh for 4.2.1 with tiny umbrella

We don't support or recommend iREB here.

Your post doesn't make any sense "restore was successful and tethered of course" - We generally use the term tethered to describe the jailbreak - not a restore (which is always by definition tethered).

Are you talking about a 4.1 to 4.2.1 restore with TinyUmbrella's TSS server running? If so... then this will always fail and be difficult to get out of. This has been clearly explained previously. Use "update" in this situation if you want to preserve your baseband.

Otherwise if you are talking about a restore to 4.1 (with saved SHSH) failing then provide your restore log file http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/130802.htm so we can troubleshoot.

My apologies for my english,I restored from 4.01 to 4.1 with TSS server running, I used redsnow for tethered jailbreak... If I use ''update'', will it update to the latest firmware while preserving same baseband? My phone is locked to AT&T, currently using it in Europe, wouldn't be a problem with the baseband? At moment I can't have the restore log file, when I have it, I will post it here.
    Thanks for your help.

There is an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.1 on ALL devices. How/why have you managed to tethered jailbreak 4.1? My guess is that you ran redsn0w 0.9.6b4 or higher and supplied redsn0w with a 4.2.1 IPSW (you should give it a 4.1 IPSW if you are trying to jailbreak 4.1!!!)

Either that or you are somehow mixing up "tethered" and "untethered"

    to be 100% clear:

"tethered jailbreak" - every time you restart your iPhone you need to connect the iPhone to your computer to kickstart the boot process. You launch redsn0w and run "just boot for tethered for now".
"untethered jailbreak" - your iPhone can be restarted without it needing to be connected to a computer to kick start the boot process.

Don't update or restore your iPhone any further until we can clarify exactly what you have done.

I know that there is an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.1 and that I intended to do. But i was keep getting the 1604 error while manually restoring, the only solution that I had found then was to restore it while the phone was in dfu. Finally I think I managed to restore while getting the 1004 error (because it kept the same baseband 1.59 but I couldn;t get out of dfu mode. Then came across this thread and tried these4. Using redsn0w 0.9.6b6 I re-jailbroke, using the SEQUENCE BELOW pointing redsn0w to a FACTORY 4.1 IPSW:

    a. jailbroke with NO boxes checked
    b. re-jailbroke with "install cydia" checked
    c. re-jailbroke with "boot tethered only" checked
    5. VOILA! it was up and running!
But when I disconnected the phone after a while the screen went black again....
I will get back to you once I have the restore log file, thanks again

I need to see restore logs.. Are you sure you are not confusing DFU and recovery mode?

You should ONLY get 1604 errors when you either (try to restore custom IPSW on a device that isn't first low level pwned) or if your IPSW is corrupt/incomplete or if you have a problem with your USB port / USB timing.

1604 is NOT an error you want to "just ignore" with iREB

It's 100% normal to get 1004 when using Tiny Umbrella's TSS server. The solution is to just use "exit recovery" option within TinyUmbrella.

I repeat.. there is absolutely no need to jailbreak tethered on 4.1 - you're doing it wrong.
Just jailbreak once (with redsn0w 0.9.6 beta 2 or higher) and select "install cydia". Supply a 4.1 factory IPSW. That should be enough.

If you continue to have trouble, try a different computer!!
