iPhone 4 at&t with 4.0.2 custom firmware as 1st owner told me "from Dev-team". He can't find it where this CF was. Warranty till July but I'm in Europe...
I got phone working 4.0.2 jailbroken with cydia but couldn't reinstall clean firmware and wanted clean system after first owner so uninstall ultrasnow decided to erase settings and files from iPhone settings menu. Phone didn't reboot like other people wrote here. Than every attempt of reinstall same fw stopped 3/4 with 1004 error. Black screen not 100% DFU mode becouse iTunes doesn't recognise it as DFU really but TU calls it DFU. Only this solution from: fredmc2020 worked and tethered phone I can boot now.

There was no official Pwnagetool/custom firmware from the iPhone dev team for 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 (for any device). Also there was zero support in Pwnagetool for the iPhone 4 until iOS 4.1

So your friend has his facts wrong/misunderstands the situtation.

1004 error is due to inability to update baseband. It always appears when you restore with cached SHSH on an iPhone 4.

Most likely you have an entry for Cydia in your hosts file and this is allowing you to restore 4.0.2 - (apple has long since stopped signing this version - so you need a SHSH from Cydia)

I wrote 1st owner same things about Custom fw. He doesn't remember.
How You would explain I couldn't erase files and settings successfully when I had working 4.0.2? Since this erase attempt I didn't boot.

So now I can only restore to official 4.2.1 changing my baseband to untether?

    Thanks for all help

Ok, he probably used limera1n - that's about the only tool I know that can jailbreak 4.0.2 on an iPhone 4.

We've explained this repeatedly here on hackint0sh.

When you choose "erase all content and settings" this removes the operating system as well. The only way to get back to normal is to restore either an original IPSW (for an iOS version you have a SHSH saved for) or restore using a custom IPSW (depending on your device and how you were jailbroken before, you might be able to restore a custom IPSW without needing a SHSH saved - this is only supported on devices made before September 2009)

In-place-jailbreaking tools like redsn0w, limera1n, greenpois0n will not fix your phone if you used "erase all content and settings", they only work on the currently installed OS. In this situation, the OS is gone (erased).

Once you have restored a stock IPSW and it actually got to the stage where it reloaded the OS and flashed the NOR images. You can use an in-place-jailbreaking utilty to re-jailbreak.

During the restore of the OS (either from stock or custom IPSW) you might encounter a restore error. Some of these are real problems and some can be ignored. Normally 1004, 1014 and 1015 can be ignored (they are all related to a failure to update or downgrade the baseband)

Depends on what SHSH you have saved for your device. If you have a 4.1 or 4.0.2 SHSH saved then you should be able to restore to that iOS version (but you will always get a 1004 error - because the baseband part of the SHSH is not saved by Cydia or TinyUmbrella)

This doesn't seem related to the current problem. It is a dangerous thing to assume that a technique which works on one generation of iPhone will work on another (especially if it is a newer generation).

As I said, the 1st owner has no technical idea. Custom Firmware was never developed for 4.0.2. (With a saved 4.0.2 SHSH, it's technically possible. Just no one has actually made a PwnageTool bundle for iPhone 4 / iOS 4.0.2)

Proper DFU mode can only be entered by holding down the correct hardware buttons in the correct sequence.

Pwned DFU mode is achived via PwnageTool. You start in Proper DFU mode and then pwnagetool sends a special exploit to the phone that allows a specially made pwnagetool custom IPSW to be sent to the phone. You still need a SHSH for the custom IPSW iOS version you are trying to restore.

Pwned DFU mode should NOT be used to restore stock IPSW. It should only be used to restore custom IPSW.

    Thank You

What would You suggest now for me?
Tethered 4.1 or 4.2.1 is strange for me. I have at&t sim still for device but no service in my country. I could service it only in US.
If I would go one baseband higher from 1.59.00 to 02.10.04 maybe this would help? Maybe unlock will come for 2.10.04 earlier than for 03.10.01
TU and Cydia shows I have shsh saved for 4.2.1.

I erased - tried to erase just for safety I imagined: I don't know what was saved or installed before. I didn't feel safe enough without clean firmware.
Is it not proper for unlocked device from not know source? I uninstalled ultraslow I supposed it's safe.

Find out what SHSH you have saved for your device.

4.1 is not a tethered jailbreak

This is a common mistake, we answer this type of question nearly every day.

If you care about keeping the ability to jailbreak - you don't choose this option (unless you are 100% sure you have a SHSH for that iOS version)

Sorry for asking same question about cleaning idevice...
    Now I understand.

Tethered 4.1 I meant I can only run my iPhone with Custom 4.1 preserved 1.59.00 baseband with Redsnow tethered boot.
