    Default SOLVED! (but now tethered)

Alright so I've solved it without need shsh blobs and without upgrading to a locked baseband! Honestly I don't know how or why, but here is what I did:

    1. Used TU v4.21.01 to run TSS server

    2. Restored to FACTORY 4.0.1 IPSW... (got error 1004)

    3. Kept TU's TSS server running and restored back to CUSTOM 4.1 FW (no errors, but black dfu screen just like before

    4. Using redsn0w 0.9.6b6 I re-jailbroke, using the SEQUENCE BELOW pointing redsn0w to a FACTORY 4.1 IPSW:

    a. jailbroke with NO boxes checked
    b. re-jailbroke with "install cydia" checked
    c. re-jailbroke with "boot tethered only" checked

    5. VOILA! it was up and running!

***NOTE: I tried re-jailbreaking with Limera1n to untether, but it got stuck in dfu mode again... so for now it's tethered, but better than no iphone4 at all!

    Good luck everybody.

    Default Better solution

ok so after that last post my iphone tweaked and went right back into the dfu loop, but I've found a better solution.

This hack/tweak lets you boot FW 4.2.1 with the 1.59 PRESERVED Baseband.

So you're tethered, but at least you're out of the dfu loop... AND UNLOCKED.

follow the directions EXACTLY, and one note: after the JB with Redsn0w my iphone was stuck at the apple logo... got out of it simply by reloading redsn0w and selecting "boot tethered".

    here's the link: How to: iPhone 4 to 4.2.1, keeping BB 1.59.00.10.04, using redsn0w to tether boot | iPhone4 Support | iPhone4 & iPhone 3Gs Support | Troubleshooting | Tips | Downloads | JailBreaking | Firmware Updates

Hi i tried ur method and i successfully downgrade my iphone 4 from 4.2.1 to 4.1. But after jailbreaking and installing all the apps from cydia that i wanted, i disconnect it from my pc and then left it at one side for some time and then i could not wake up the iphone from sleep mode/ standby mode. Do you have the same problem? how to you fix this?

I had the same problem you are describing. I ended up just restoring to a custom 4.2.1 with the 1.59 bb to fix it.. I was tired of messing around with 4.1. While the "boot tethered" option was able to start it up about 4 or 5 times for me on 4.1, it led to nothing showing up on the screen at all (even during the restore process, which made me nervous). So like I said, I was sick of it and used the instructions from my last post to upgrade to 4.2.1 modded to work with 1.59 bb.

    What ???
i think you have your versioning mixed up.
4.1 is untethered and 4.2.1 IS tethered at this time.

I don't get it.. doesn't iTunes want to restore your iPhone? If that's the problem, I can help you.
Well download the latest firmware (4.2.1) and then turn off your firewall and then click (while holding shift) on "Restore" and choose the .ipsw file and it'll work. I had the same problem and it helped.
Make sure you've turned off firewall BEFORE you open iTunes because then it won't work.

I'm on Mac but everything else had same. I bought iP4 4.0.2 and couldn't reinstall with custom FW or any other, official one. Used for one week with 4.0.2 without restoring and than did delete all data through iphone settings - same like 1st post didn't boot after that. Tried all things You wrote (thanks!) and tethered is not enough for me...
I did found solution for 3GS - unplug battery and did it few times - it's easy but didn't get me out of DFU loop.
Contacted 1st owner he told me he used Custom Firmware and Limera1n from "Dev-Team Blog" - he wrote but we can't find it...

I must say for me it's not really DFU... I'm using PWNTOOL to get proper DFU to avoid 1600 error - it only way - than as You wrote I can einstall to every FW.

this is not DFU. Yesterday after some 1000 of installations and "Your tether method" gave me strange behaviour: iP4 was seen on Device connected in TU and in iTunes gave sounds, touch screen worked but there was no image! I swap places I know to power off and it worked - turned off to pseudo DFU
    - I restore it, tried to some early setup and it hang on boot Apple...

You guy should understand what you are doing.
You 're trying out stuff without any clear understanding how things work and that is dangerous.
You must have your SHSH before you can attempt any of this stuff.
